Taming Animals

Adventurer's Handbook

A lonely adventurer might try to acquire an animal companion. This companion will be a wild animal that you train and befriend using your abilities.

Resource costs

Taming an animal is a lengthy and expensive process. An adventurer must spend at least 5 downtime days and 25 gp in expenses. You can spend more Downtime Days and gold in order to increase your odds of befriending a specific creature or creatures of higher CRs.

Taming

A character seeking to tame a beast must make a Wisdom (Animal Handling) check. This check will determine the challenge rating of the creature you can tame. You gain a plus one bonus for every 1 downtime days you spend in addition to the original 5, and a plus one bonus for every 25 gp you spend past the initial 25, to a maximum of +10 to the roll. Use the Table below to determine the results of your activity.

Taming Restrictions

  • Tamed creature must be a beast with an Intelligence score no higher than 4
  • Tamed creature cannot be a swarm
