Crafting a magical item is a more involved process. It involves the tracking down of lore and slaying of a specific creature for the collection of magical ingredients.
Brewing health potions and scribing spell scrolls are an exception to these rules.
The Process
Firstly, a character must research the lore regarding their item. The lore will contain three points of interest. The magical material required, the creature known to be the source of that material, and the recipe for the items creation.
Secondly, the characters must locate the magical material required for their desired item's construction. This could involve picking rare flowers that grow in a Roc's Nest, or it could involve collecting a vial of blood from a Vampire Bat. This step will always take place as part of a session. Regardless of the number of creatures slain, the session can only yield enough material to create one copy of the magic item.
Attempting the combat session will cost 20 downtime days and 50 gold.
Roll on the table below to determine the CR of the encounter required to craft your item.
Item Rarity | CR Range | Calculation Required |
Common | 1-3 | roll 1d4-1 |
Uncommon | 4-8 | roll 1d4 |
Rare | 9-12 | roll 1d4 |
Very Rare | 13-18 | roll 1d6 |
Legendary | 19+ | roll 1d4 |
Thirdly, the item has a gold piece cost that represents the covering of other materials. This number, in addition to the amount of time required to craft the item are listed in this table.
Item Rarity | Downtime Days* | Cost* |
Common | 5 | 50 gp |
Uncommon | 10 | 200 gp |
Rare | 50 | 2,000 gp |
Very Rare | 125 | 20,000 gp |
Legendary | 250 | 100,000 gp |
*Halved for a consumable item, like a potion or scroll
Finally, to complete the magic item, a character needs proficiency in an appropriate tool as like crafting a non-magical variety of the object. Alternatively you may substitute proficiency in the Arcana skill.
