SCHOLARLY JOURNAL DESCRIPTIONS

Some journals have requirements to read/use.

• The Nature of Magic (requires Arcana) - The Nature of Magic is a work thoroughly confounding. Somehow this seems a foundational tome on magic, as if it had only just been discovered? It is the oldest of the books from the Elven ruins beneath the mole burrows, and not an original copy. It has annotations in the margins. It seems the text was a historical artifact even in Zalaels age. 

• The Annals of the Shining City (Society) - Annals of the Shining City are mostly about intrigue, except the final chapter. The final chapter speaks about the city sinking beneath. It speculates that there was foul play involved. It seems to be written by one of Zalaels compatriots.

• The School of Relelian Casting (Any magic skill) - The School of Relelian casting is a textbook on spellcasting, relating to metamagic. The shaping of spells through magic turning and manipulating magic was of great interest to an ancient elf by the name of Relel. Seemingly, Relel was a contemporary of Zalael, and one of his academic rivals. Both worked different fields, but they each competed for prestige. This tome can be used to learn Fireball and Sea Surge.

• Rydess, Queen of the Desert This book, translated into Common by the guild, looks like a collection of notes taken by a scholar named Fawkes. It describes Rydess's behaviour during the time he spent with her as her storyteller. Fawkes does not tell in what circumstances he arrived on the island, but only that Rydess soon found him near an oasis of "petrified trees" and brought him to "the tallest mountain, perpetually covered by stormy clouds in the middle of the desert." He recalls hearing the sound of a powerful heartbeat while in that mountain, but he never understood its source. He was confined in this prison for about three months, during which Rydess fed him carcasses of "giant worms", which Fawkes did not find appetising, but at least they were nutritious, if their poison was removed from the body. When he escaped, during one of Rydess' "venting flights to her crystal city", he climbed the southern mountainside, spotting "strange ruins at the base": he decided against exploring them, though, because he was in a hurry. In his travels across the desert landscape, he barely managed to hide his presence from the dragon, who scouted the area for one week before renouncing. The last part of his travels is described to be in the "territories of Rydess' children, the Watchers: a fertile land where monsters lurk in the dark, and ghosts roam a dead forest".

• Fey Courts Drama (Sylvan)- This compendium of tomes was donated by Reiko Amiri, envoy of First Landing during the failed wedding of King Aseron and Svetlana, self-proclaimed princess of the western hordes. It contains compiled information by one Lord Geyesh, the late satyr that attempted to poison King Aseron. 

• "Of Tinctures and Treatments: An Intense Treatise" (Alchemy Lore) - This book does not contain any recipes, but instead delves into certain alchemical techniques aimed at the preservation of health, and how to prolong one's life through the assumption of certain compounds. The book warns that it is merely a way to stave off death, though, which is inevitable. Its contents are akin to a Medical Art, but many of the techniques involve the use of arcane magic, while others look like the very foundations of the modern alchymy common in the Old World. 

• "Anatomical Atlases of the Apex Race" - The anatomical atlases describe the anatomy of elves in extreme detail, from the broader scale to the most detailed one of every single organ. The diaries instead describe the daily life of the lonely wizard, only mentioning the topic of his research, but not going into details. Now and then, he also comments on the events of the elven society around him.

• "Diaries of Lamwen Darr: 1200-1300" - The Merger laments (once again, by his writing) that he feels observed. Moreover, more and more of his fellow wizards or researchers refuse to answer his letters, or are reported to be missing. All of them were researching immortality, be it for personal use or for mere interest. He does not feel safe anymore, and placed even more wards around his tower. He also says that his own work on immortality needs a lot more refining, and is very far from completion. This is the absolute last page of the book, hinting that he started another and continued it until his... End. Sadly, Cornix was not able to retrieve further diaries apart from this one.

• Life Beyond Life (Arcana) - Life Beyond Life features incredibly dense magical writings on the ties between magic and a theoretical form of unlife. A veritable recipe book for creating undead. It even features rudimentary theorising on the extraction of one's soul. An undying body. The final frontier. Contains Create Undead (ghouls) ritual.

• 2nd Heartbond
