Welcome to the Vigilants. You are one of the thousands of people living in the imperial capital of Sentra, the jewel of the Empire

For some of you, this is home—a comfortable and familiar place you've known your entire life.  For others, the city may only be a brief stop, perhaps one of many in your travels.  But regardless of how you came here, you share the same streets.

Depending on who you are—and where you live—Sentra can be a beautiful city of wonder and splendor. Yet that perfect city is only what many people see on the surface.  There are those that understand there is more to the city, that there are flaws in it that run deeper than what most will see.  There are those that know what lies beneath.

The Story

Niman was a student studying theoretical thaumaturgy at Pallida University. Originally from Seidland, he was granted a scholarship granted by one of the foundations of House Fournius. He has no family in the city.

He died from an acute case of Arcstone poisoning, which should not have been possible given his circumstances. An autopsy revealed that his internal anatomy was mirrored.

Renatus is home to the School of Arcane Theory and Application at Pallida University.

Faculty offices, study rooms, and collaboration spaces are on the third floor. The second and first floor are classrooms, with one larger auditorium-style lecture hall on the first floor. The basement houses the workshops and laboratories. There is a service/freight levitator connecting the floors, as well as a staircase near the center of the building.

The Singers were mentioned by Mordenkai, who called himself a former Listener of theirs. He says that they would speak to him, a chorus of voices, and tell him what to do. They extended his lifespan, and may have given him other supernatural powers as well. He does not remember the things that he was asked to do, but seemed to grow fearful.

The latest Listener is unknown, but Mordenkai believed that they are currently in the city of Sentra. Cephius er'Ceasian may have been that Listener.

The Singers match dark tales of elvish bogeymen called ustasi duyarti (which roughly translates to "puppet master"). They sang to their victims to force them to do things against their will.

Random Spotlights

The commercial area in Oenus Ward known as the Tradefair had been used by traders long before the Emperor decreed that the Imperial Docks fell under government control, but the area's use and popularity grew exponentially as it become the major place for imports to and exports from the city that were heading out by river to the Imperial Sea.  There's an extensive collection of warehouses, many of which belong to the Cornys Family, as well as wharves, drydocks, taverns, and other industries of trading by river.

The Tradefair is also something of a tourist area, home to a number of high class inns, taverns, and other places of entertainment, but only in a smaller area centered around the Market Bridge.  This area is highly patrolled by the Imperial Watch.

Places of Note

The Jewel of the River is a high-end inn that offers both dinner and entertainment, usually musical acts of some kind.

The Gilded Stage is a popular theater, showcasing works of local playwrights.  It is well known for the debut theater of the famous actor, Chalinus Maltinus.

River Tavern is found in an old wooden building with a large sign showing a picture of a river beside a tankard.  Close to the wharf, it's a popular site for traders and river pilots, and not an uncommon place for backroom deals.  The owner and bartender, a portly man known only as Gusto, serves beer, cheap wine, and few basic food items.  Gusto always seems to have spilled drink or food on his apron, but he keeps his handlebar moustache meticulous.

Firelight is a reputable establishment for those seeking companionship.  Its clients have discerning tastes that seek companions for public functions as well as more private encounters. More than one noble from Wyvern Towers has discretely visited.

The Buttered Biscuit is a bakery run by Liam Crow.

Cute As A Button Boutique is a small but popular shop, mostly for refined and tasteful dresses.

The Market Bridge crosses the River Oenus to the Overlook neighborhood of Gravus' Gate.   The tall bridge spans up river from the last of the Tradefair docks.

Ren has been raised on stories of his family in the Imperial Watch enough that he wants to be the kind hero his Great Grandfather was.  He was able to use his great grandfather’s name to actually get into the Watch, but quickly felt disheartened.  No one seemed to really care about justice like his great grandfather.  Add to this the mocking that he often receives being a mix of two "lesser" races, and Ren quit the Watch.  He probably would have happily joined the Vigilants except he has been many stories from the Watch and his family that do not paint them in a good light. Now that he is no longer with the Watch, Ren tries to work as a kind of vigilante in the poorer districts like the Warrens, hoping the Watch will notice his good work and ask him to come back.

Ren has been sheltered by his family's above average status and shaped by their stories which makes him a little naïve on how things work in the real world.  He also tends to be a little clumsy (He tends to break cobblestones when dropping his mace.)  Despite his size and appearance he is absolute rubbish at intimidation and persuasion.  Still, he is driven in the pursuit of justice, and is more than okay with bending the rules to see it done.  He considers himself heroic, aiding those that need it and helping them find justice too.  Despite being actually less than half elvish, he tends to take after that side of his family in his looks.  He is tall with long lanky hair and skinny for someone of orc blood, although still well muscled.  He could possibly be considered attractive if one also liked green skin and prominent canine teeth.

The Chamber of Arcane is a bastion of magical knowledge and influence, one of the three legislative bodies of the Imperial government. The original chamber was formed by thirteen skilled wizards, all veteran battlemages of various imperial conflicts. The inception of the chamber was spurred by the recognition of the importance of arcane arts in the Empire's victories during these times.

Today, the chamber still consists of 13 wizards. They are carefully curated to include only those with significant arcane prowess, and excludes Magewrights, emphasizing the need for expertise and mastery in the arcane arts to hold legislative authority. With military roots, they historically held significant influence over military strategy and the development of arcane technologies.

The Chamber of Arcane assumes responsibilities related to magical legislation, the oversight of enchanted artifacts, and ensuring the ethical use of arcane power. While maintaining independence, it collaborates with the other chambers for cohesive governance.

Together with the Governors' Chamber and Lords' Chamber, they have veto power over the Emperor.
