The subject of quite a bit of mockery, the Halfling magic-users from Helladris have the tradition of wearing oversized pointed hats.

While many jest about this being "compensation" for their small stature, the tradition actually originates from an arcane exercise. The trick is to wear a hat of soft, flowing material and attempt to keep it upright using only one's concentration. Students of magic would often try to startle each other in an attempt to break each other's focus.

Losing one's concentration or making a mistake due to absent-mindedness is known as "dropping one's hat" in Helladris for this very reason.

The actual practice of keeping the hat upright through magic is not performed often anymore, as it's seen as old-fashioned and impractical. Nowadays, many halfling mages buy hats made from stiffer fabric, that does not require any telekinesis.
