Selathwin Muleyr the Hawk is a powerful elven mage, one of the Eyes of the Council of Dreamers in Sanaris, and a member of the Flock.  She is a well known and respected voice across the country, and uses this clout to pursue various subjects of research. She is the world's leading expert on ley lines.

Description

Selathwin is an older elf, but holds herself up with a high posture and excellent poise. She has long, flowing silver-grey hair and faint wrinkles across her face. Her ears are folded closely to the sides of her head but are still rather long. She wears resplendent silver and white robes as well as silver circlet with a white gem in the center. Selathwin holds an old, intermittently nocked staff that appears to have survived several lifetimes.

Selathwin has the heart of a researcher, and has little time for anything else. Her behavior is solely dictated by her immediate interests, and she will cross social and physical boundaries to get what she desires. She tends to approach people as objects of study, and often denigrates those of little interest to her.

Skills and Abilities

Selathwin is a powerful wizard, as evidenced by her position in the Council of Dreamers. While there is no complete list of her abilities, she has been observed performing the following feats:

  • Appearing out of thin air
  • Transporting a large group of people
  • Establishing a pocket space where time passes slowly
  • Knowing that the Peas had tampered with ley line magic (possible divination)

In addition, Selathwin is known to be a master artificer, creating many magical devices. Her studies in key magic allowed her to create a strange device in the Temple of the Earth that could infuse individuals with ley energy without causing them to explode.

Selathwin is also an expert in various subjects of research, including spatial magic, biological transmutation, and ley energy.

History

Selathwin was born in Iron 358, on a boat traveling from Weysol to Ivosassick. However, during the journey shortly after Selathwin's birth, the vessel was caught in a freak storm that resulted in the destruction of the boat's hull. Only a small number of the ship's inhabitants survived to escape in rowboats, but Selathwin's mother and brother died in the wreck, leaving only her two older sisters, still children by elven standards, to take care of her.

In Iron 503, Selathwin was recognized for her work in transmutative medicine after she created a spell that was capable of isolating and cutting out the virulent Greenbloat disease. This breakthrough allowed wizards to also lend their expertise towards fighting back the disease instead of simply clerics, and is regarded by many scholars as the turning point against the blight.

By Iron 524, Selathwin had pivoted away from biological transmutative magic and was instead enraptured by spatial magic. She began to work on manifesting trans-dimensional spaces, and became a world-renowned expert on pocket dimensions. In Iron 530, by an accident of her own admission, Selathwin stumbled upon a method of teleportation that involved jutting an object into a space in the Astral Plane where time moved irregularly, making it so that it arrived just before it was sent. While Selathwin's discovery was hailed as a turning point in teleportative magics, the ritual to do so required an immense amount of energy. Regardless, Selathwin was invited to become a member of the Flock after her discovery, taking the title of the Hawk.

In Iron 599, after struggling to improve her teleportation designs for years, Selathwin fell into a deep depression, abandoning her post in the Council of Dreamers to wander the world in search of inspiration. Objectionable sources state that she once opened a tavern in Astrilane briefly, but Selathwin herself denies this.

In Iron 772, Selathwin began studying ley energy after she observed it disrupting the magic of one of her more delicate experiments. She began studying individuals that had survived direct contact with ley energies

In Iron 951, Selathwin directly contacted the adventuring party the Peas after they absorbed a large amount of ley energy following the defeat of Weil Syllis and the Bottle Demon. While the group was in a meeting with the leaders of Hymathel, the wizard suddenly ported in, obscuring herself with a thick robe. She whisked the party away to a small, stony room where the interrogated them on their involvement with the ley lines and examined them for residual effects caused by the magic. After she was satisfied, she returned the group to the meeting room, offered a rude comment about to the mage Ryla Mulaweyrn regarding her missing arm, made Deowyn Centhos faint, and promptly teleported away.

Selathwin met with Renbedar Uleshan, a fellow member of the Flock, regarding the wizard's improper use of her research into ley line magic to kill the dragon Zahast. She also discussed the recent fluctuations she observed beyond Renbedar's device, believing the Nightseeker was attempting to use ley energy to some end. After confirming these suspicions later, Selathwin led an expedition with a large number of ley-affected individuals out into the Isles of Wrath in order to attempt to use ley energy to imbue them with power. After discovering a ley map in the Temple of the Earth, Selathwin sent three teams across the world to attune special crystals to specific ley resonances. With these signatures, Selathwin was able to stabilize her strange machine, allowing a number of individuals, including the Peas, to gain a large amount of power just before the Battle for the Sun.

Selathwin herself would fight in the Battle for the Sun, even though her most potent spatial magics were being suppressed by the power of the god Jylurm. Still, near the end of the conflict, she managed to manifest a powerful portal to transport the army away from the exploding Shadow Fort.

In Iron 955, Selathwin declared her support of the Alliance in the Great Throne War, and led the majority of the Council of Dreamers in breaking away from the Khymal Set. During the war, she continued to study ley magic, eventually producing a consumable liquid she dubbed Unknown, a small drop of condensed, stabilized ley energy that could temporarily augment a user's power with minimal side effects. The use of this power was questioned by the leaders of the Alliance, as many still did not trust the stability of ley energy, but it is suspected that the drops were used in secret raids conducted by Alliance saboteurs.
