While presenting this as a purely business move to aid in his own shipping empire, we have learned that this was really for the far more sinister purpose of concealing a deep family secret.
It seems that many years ago the man fell into the clutches of an impossibly beautiful woman and engaged in a secret tryst with her… except she was a reptilian! She gave birth to a half-human, half-lizard girl of beauty nearly equal to that of her mother, but as she grew older her reptile heritage became apparent and could no longer be concealed from view. Particularly when she molted and her human skin cracked to reveal the lizard beneath. The family invented a story that she had died and hid her away in secret.
