JF18. Exploring Cinderwatch

Completed

Following on from the Letter from Doctor Lucian Weaver to his sister, Lyra found in the shipwreck  (JF17. The Sunken Wreck), and the decision to lie to Eckbert Kanrei about where they found the information about Lucian Weaver, the Jade Foxes headed to the fishing village of Cinderwatch.  There they explored the village, asking what they could about the missing archeologist.  They quickly heard rumours that something strange was affecting the dragonborn population of the local jungle from the local gnomish blacksmith - who had seen his daughter carried off by a dragonborn covered in strange blue growths.

While on Gumbler's Row, Rahl Morninglow spotted that someone was watching them.  Following them, they found an elven woman who tried to run, but Kraxor Tyraneroth tripped her with his glaive, which sent her sprawling to the ground.  She denied spying on them and ran again; Rahl Morninglow momentarily lost sight of her, but quickly discovered that she had changed both her own appearance and that of her clothes.  They followed the figure, now in the form of a human man, back to the Moonbeam and to Eckbert Kanrei's cabin.  Barging in, they found the Professor getting changed - and decided that it was he that had been following them.

The Jade Foxes booked lodgings at Kiki's Floating-Home-Away-From-Home, where they encountered Kiki's two simulacrum.  They investigated the lodgings that Lucian Weaver had rented from Kiki, and found that he was investigating a ruin upstream of the town near a waterfall.  They rested for the night, and then headed out the next morning.

They reached the waterfall without incident after a few hours of travel, but when they arrived there they saw two feral dragonborn feasting on the body of a gnomish woman - the blacksmith's daughter.  Fighting the dragonborn, the Jade Foxes found that the dragonborn were infected with strange icy growths that exploded when hit.  After the battle, Rahl Morninglow investigated behind the waterfall and found symbols carved in the wall.  The symbols showed the pattern that Kraxor Tyraneroth used as part of his meditative morning routine training with his glaive.

Kraxor Tyraneroth performed the routine in front of the wall, which opened a crack and let an icy wave of air through.  They headed inside, and followed the dark tunnel.  The tunnel lead to an opening with a small water-feature coming out of the wall; on inspection, Sarran noticed that the water was running in reverse somehow.  Continuing on, the tunnel came to a dead stop with another passage downwards.  However when Rahl Morninglow sent his bird ahead, the bird struggled before righting itself as if orientated towards to the wall.  Clearly both time and gravity were working strangely in this place.

They finally met Lucian Weaver, who seemed half-mad.  He kept repeating "The Circle Must Complete" to himself, and was determined to carry on to find what had drawn him to this place.  The Jade Foxes reluctantly agreed to follow him, and together they continued onwards into the depths of Q'Barra (JF19. Completing The Circle).
