The Varmandi are a small clan, numbering some 450 people. They herd cattle and sheep in Stael’s Hills and the Thunder Hills claimed by other clans, and this often puts them intoconflict with their neighbors. Their main settlement is the small walled village of Oakton. The clan wyter resides in the Oak of Vengeance, a sacred oak in the center of Oakton, and is the source of the clan’s terrifying war cry and their ability to heal themselves in combat. The clan chief serves as the wyter’s priest. They are sometimes known as the “Badger clan.”

The Varmandi have had a turbulent and violent history, even by Sartar standards. They were among the First Wave of colonists and settled in the Arfritha Vale around 1325. They were driven out of their homes by the Malani circa 1340, and they settled in the Stael’s Hills and Ormthane Vale. In 1390, the Orleving clan led by Orlev Eye-spear took the Greenstone Temple and forced the Varmandi out of Ormthane Vale. In 1407, the Varmandi allied with the Hiording to destroy the Lonisi clan, thus starting the Taral War. In 1413, the Colymar tribe intervened and the Varmandi joined the Colymar tribe and have never broken since from the tribe. Much later, King Tarkalor built a tower and hunting lodge in Varmandi lands to keep peace between the Colymar and Malani tribes. The keep was abandoned during the Lunar Empire  Occupation and became a base for bandits, outlaws, and rebels.

After the Varmandi warrior chief Rastorlanth died during Starbrow’s Rebellion, the women of the clan selected a wealthy farmer, Vastyr the Gentle, to be clan chieftain. Gentle Vastyr died during the Great Winter; in 1622, a former outlaw and poet turned Wind Lord named Korol Serpent-Tongue was selected as the next chief. Korol is an aggressive and violent man who is popular amongst his clan.

The clan tattoo is a stylized bear.
