"He who worships Jorvik, knows not Jorvik at all."

- Jorvikki Proverb

Jorvik the Trickster, also known as The Lucksmith, Coinflipper, and That Cheeky Bastard(!), he is the god of luck, mischief, and gambling. He is the most fickle and playful of all the gods, passing out his favour most freely and snatching it away just as readily. His symbol is that of a double-sided coin.

History

Jorvik's origins are possibly the most murky of all the gods and certainly the least understood of all those whom ascended post-curse owing to the fact that the stories of how he rose to the heavens are as varied as there are ideas spawned in the heads of the intoxicated. Even the other gods of Aranor appear grudgingly unawares of this particular joker entered their midst and to many of them he has been likened as a pebble in their boots that one can never shake loose. The two most prevailing theories is that he is either in fact the lost god of the halflings Doriac whom has emerged from hiding or that he was a mortal man whom by some epic feat of trickery picked the lock of the heavens.

Regardless of where he came from, Jorvik is decidedly here to stay in spite of the fruitless efforts of Torek to refute the validity of Jorvik's claims to godhood or Falandine's feeble attempts to put a stop to his meddling with the workings of fate.

Characteristics

Jorvik is known to assume whatever form he finds amusing at the time but the passing tales of his sightings have concluded his most consistent choice is that of a hooded, ever-grinning halfling clad in a discordant riot of conspicuous colours. Notably, it seems it did not please him to pinned down to this particular appearance and it has since diversified still farther. While chaotic and anarchic in nature, there is method and personality in his madness unlike that of the true god of chaos Oohros, one that is not entirely malevolent but certainly neither outright benevolent.

He is known to occasionally load the dice in the fates of those with great fortunes and those without it, turning luck around for those who lack it and challenging those who have had a great deal of it already, ever curious to see how things might play out when the scales are tipped against the status quo. It is however apparent that he will favour rebellious souls who oppose authority and stand against the established order, particularly fond of those willing to take a risk, the bigger the better. But the good luck he bestows tends only to last so long, especially against those whom become complacent because of it to keep them on their toes.

Worship

Actual clergy, let alone temples, of Jorvik are very few and far between but his wayshrines can be found along various roads and his symbol carved into many a tavern table. Gamblers, adventurers, and all others whose lives and livelihoods will often depend on no small measure of luck to make it through the day are regular subjects of lip service to Jorvik, but the often-fleeting worship he tends to receive from the wider masses is largely made up for by the fervour of his true devotees. Those who can put up with the trials and tribulations he puts them through can find themselves earning his true favour, which is accepted for the double-edged sword that it is, in which they find a worthy patron to support them in their fortunes and causes for as long as they remain exciting to the coinflipper.

While the saying that fortune favours the bold may very well precede Jorvik's ascension, the meaning has become quite literal since then. Willingly exposing oneself to risk and danger for the prospects of great rewards is at the heart of Jorvik's faith, especially to do so with a grin on your face and wit on your tongue is the fastest way to the trickster's heart whom desires nothing more than to be forever entertained by the daring of mortals and their twists of fortune.
