The cliffs of the south side of the bay from the The Castillo to the The Gullet are dotted with artillery emplacements. These emplacements are connected by a military road (the Castillo road) that ran from the Castillo to the Gullet itself
The north side of the bay, being mostly swampy and shallow, was harder to fortify. However the hamlet of Tillage, located on a small northern hill, received a large battery of guns that controlled the northern approaches.
