"Flown the COOP" - slang. To have evaded impressment officers from the Caanfo Office of Outside Personnel. Usually, one flies the coop after being caught brawling or being accused of something. Impressment officers are thought not to be overly fussy about "proof".

Spiked Catchpole

2x10: Target is trapped by the neck. Must make a Body skill check to escape. Take 1S to the head each turn until escaped. All actions are at -1d. All damage ignores armor.

4x10: As above, except take 2S to both arms, and 1K to the head.

The Slice is a spit of land that abuts the Oms river. It has docks for riverboats that head downstream for fishing and pleasure. On the south side of The Slice, sewers drain into the river, making the south side considerably less desirable than the north end, which is built up taller and more expensively. The bridges are generally controlled by neighborhood watch, and so the area is considered a retreat from the rest of the city, surrounded as it is by walls and river.

Dame Goditha's family has a mansion in Cloverview, where she keeps her main library. Her family has ill relations with the Ramward family due to an old feud about The Pandect. Ramwards hew to the spirit of the law, and Chaplands (lawyers by lineage) only concern themselves with its letter.

Caanfo Keep (derisively referred to as "the Can" by its inmates) has been converted into a military outpost for the penal legion. It has been refitted not only to repel invaders, but also to contain its inmate men-at-arms. It has three concentric walls, each containing various stages of prisoner. At the outermost layer, the soldiers are serving light sentences, or have graduated there for good behavior. The innermost core of penal legionaries are the "slayers", men and women sentenced to die for their crimes - in battle, if they are fortunate. Slayers are never sent forth except to meet an enemy. The prison itself is mandated to be self-sufficient, and a great deal of labor is done by inmates to achieve this. 

The Slice - Riverside Fletching Co. [367gp] Fletcher: Joyce Clark: [HGT: 4ft, 3in; WGT: 90 lbs] An older woman, with an imperious air that does not match her size. She has stringy, red hair. She likes to ride down the river, when she can find the time. Shakes her fist in anger a lot. DRESSED IN: tan ankle boots, and a faded red dress. King's Market North - Athos Highlands Lumber Co [1,342gp] Woodworker: Wilda Willis: [HGT: 4ft, 8in; WGT: 120 lbs] She is an older woman with gray hair braided in a crown. She is a collector of whalebone scrimshaw.  DRESSED IN: tan fur boots, tan short pants, green tricorne hat, and a dark-red doublet. Crown Hill East - King Street Curatives [536gp] Alchemist: Albertha Bain: [HGT: 6ft, 4in; WGT: 225 lbs] She is a graduate of the Cambion's Archive, but doesn't use her magic much, since magical cures can be undone. Auburn hair in a plait, dirty apron, and green-stained hands.  DRESSED IN: black knee boots, dirty apron, gray skirt, and a red shirt. POSSESSIONS: map to an abandoned mine in the mountains, cheese, platinum ring (39 gp), dagger.

King's Market Central - Instruments and Things [955gp] Musician: Rollie Olaughlin: [HGT: 6ft, 1in; WGT: 200 lbs] A bald man with a chin strap beard and a heavy sunburn. Spends a lot of time busking. Sees a lot on the street, has a good pulse on city events. DRESSED IN: brown sandals, gray pants, red feathered wool hat, and a blue fancy shirt. POSSESSIONS: stiff parchment business card.

King's Market East - Harcourt Blacksmith  [1,903gp] Proprietor: Myrtis Keiler: [HGT: 5ft, 6in; WGT: 170 lbs] An aging dandy with coils of dark brown hair. She has an ergot-beer addiction and a long, catlike tail. DRESSED IN: dark-brown gold-buckled thigh boots, purple pants, and a black embroidered silk blouse. She has a taxidermy mouse on her shoulder named Pym. She does a "Simplicio" bit with it. POSSESSIONS: copper bead bracelet, gold ring (4 gp), straight razor.

There's no smithy here, this place just sells surplus from Caanfo. The quality varies greatly, but they sell a lot of unusual items.

Crown Hill, Barbican Ave - The Old Winchester Tavern [1,373gp] Matron: Zettie Harvey: [HGT: 7ft, 2in; WGT: 350 lbs] Zettie is a platinum blond woman early in middle age with a heartless gaze and a perfect smile. Known to be well-connected among Pact syndicates, and rumored to have killed several husbands. DRESSED IN: gray knee boots, and a black cashmere A-frame dress. POSSESSIONS: shot-through gold piece, invitation to a "special event", dice, cards, snuff, darts, piano wire, and a small leather bag with 40gp.

The Winchester Tavern is protected by the local crime triad, the Pact. Any criminal activity toward anyone on its premises will be dealt with severely. Guards won't even arrest wanted criminals in the Winchester.

Sweet Lane - The Sundowner Wolf [1,506gp] Bartender: Bess Moody: [HGT: 5ft, 4in; WGT: 225 lbs] An older woman with a big belly and many sons-in-law (who do all the work). She mostly smokes on the porch and greets patrons, trading gossip and pleasantries. She has a great interest in fishing. Some people say she's a witch. DRESSED IN: black boots, and a faded black dress. POSSESSIONS: pair of bone dice, leather sack with precious stones (coral - 4ea worth 239gp) and (zircon - 3ea worth 162gp). She will trade gems for information about her son Carson, a Caanfo slayer.

The bar is tended by three henpecked men, all named John. Or at least Bess calls them all John.

King's Market Northwest - The Hungry Hippogriff Pawn Shop [2,777gp] Merchant: Odelia Bartley: [HGT: 7ft, 2in; WGT: 250 lbs] A young, tall dandy smoking from an Al Qudsi hookah. She likes to roll dice as part of dickering. She is currently making sand art between two plates of glass.  DRESSED IN: dark-green thigh boots, golden-brown hoop skirt dress, gold wire-framed spectacles, a green fascinator hat, and a red corset. POSSESSIONS: wooden vial of rare Zerzuran smoking spices, handful of exotic seeds (12 ea), various pouches of colored sand.

This pawn shop has been previously fined for fencing. Mr. Bartley is serving a year in Caanfo for harboring a wanted criminal.

North Frontage, West Road - Starbound Stables  [1,319gp] Animal Trainer: Adelina Armstrong: [HGT: 5ft; WGT: 175 lbs] She is a wiry young woman with mange. She likes to spend time fishing by the river.  DRESSED IN: leather stable shoes, canvas pants, and a stained old armless shirt. A conspicuously-worn pair of knuckle dusters on a belt loop. King's Market North Courtyard - Valley Tailors [1,017gp] Dressmaker: Louella Mills: [HGT: 5ft, 3in; WGT: 160 lbs] She is a brown-haired, mousy older woman with pursed lips and slightly narrow eyes. A textile broker who opened a sideline in downmarket clothing, her customers accept imperfections for low costs.  DRESSED IN: white slippers, blue bandana, and a patchwork dress. Mr. Howett's three sons all joined the Thorkel Fforde gang. One died, one is a Caanfo slayer, and the other's fate is unknown.  DRESSED IN: gray sandals, black pants, yellow hat, and a white doublet.
