The White Lions are a military police force charged with internal security to Karrnath. While Karrnath does have a system of localized law enforcement implemented by the variuos warlords, capable of handling common problems like ordinary theft and violent disputes, truly serious crimes are escalated to the White Lions. As military police, the White Lions have extensive powers compared to other nations, with the martial law of Karrnath offering few civil liberties. While the White Lions report to First Warlord Eadric Ivanovich, their subsidiary counterintelligence organization the Twilight Brigade (colloquially known as the Dark Lions) reports back to Moranna.

Hierarchy

As a branch of Karrnath’s armed services, the White Lions ultimately answer to Twilight Brigade (colloquially known as the Dark Lions), a counterintelligence and counterterrorism branch Kaius III formed when he took power. The Twilight Brigade is run by Kaius’ spymaster, Moranna ir'Wynarn.

As a national organization the regional generals do not directly answer to the warlords in whose territory they operate, but they typically maintain a close relationship. When conflict over goals, or more commonly methods, occurs, the regional generals know they have the formal power to override a warlord’s wishes, but understand that the informal levers of power may result in them losing their position if they do not have the explicit backing of Kaius.

Recruiting

The White Lions recruit alongside the rest of Karrnath’s military, through service requirements enforced by martial law. In the early days of the war, the White Lions were seen as a soft job suited to those who feared the glory of battle. As the war dragged on and the luster disappeared, the White Lions became a more attractive option safely away from the increasing number of undead on the front lines. In the post-Thronehold era the White Lions see much more regular activity than the other branches of Karrnath’s military, making them an attractive option to young men and women seeking to serve their country.

Missions and Methods

Generally speaking, the White Lions exist to handle problems too big for a sheriff and deputy to handle. The White Lions are not tasked with community policing or handling complex problems in a delicate fashion - when the White Lions are called in, expect drawns swords and bloodshed.

One of the most basic and continual operations conducted by the White Lions is the protection of government officials. While every warlord has their own set of guards, important officials in the Karrnathi national government and military rely on the White Lions to protect themselves. The White Lions can go toe to toe with Deneith when it comes to martial prowess and evocation, but often need to hire Deneith or Medani abjurers for more magical forms of protection.

The importance of the counterintelligence and counterterrorism grew significantly when Kaius III evicted the Order of the Emerald Claw from its position of influence. In the post-war era the Twilight Brigade is continually investigating plots instigated by the other nations or the Order of the Emerald Claw. Lacking some of the subtlety and tact of those competing organizations, the Twilight Brigade has a very short track record of creating double agents and a very long track record of executions for espionage.

The final function of the White Lions is border management and tariff collection. Charged with preserving the security of Karrnath as a nation, the White Lions watch the borders for wanted fugitives and merchants overburdened by wealth. Due to the frequency with which the Valaes Tairn of Valenar ride up through the plains to strike at Karrnathi strongholds, the White Lions are most vigilant at the southern border, protecting villages and towns not under the umbrella of Fort Bones and Fort Zombie.

Resources

The White Lions are well funded and equipped, as is befitting their military status in Karrnath. However, as is common within the country, its pool of magical talent is primarily limited to evocation specialists. This leaves them especially frustrated when confronted by the intensely magical Royal Eyes, whose command over illusion and enchantment is unparalleled within the five nations. As such, the White Lions rely heavily on dragonmarked house contracts to cover those magical needs that can’t be solved by fireball.
