"Still Alive-For Now"

Faerûnians openly make offerings to Myrkul out of fear, such as during funeral services or when honoring their dead. The Church of the Bone Lord is not a popular choice of profession for most people, except for those with a fascination for the dead or a desire to provide funerary advice to the common folk.

The average priesthood of Myrkul is recruited from the stable pool of orphans in regions with a strong Myrkulite presence (Lake of Steam, Calimshan, Thay), which are orphaned due to wars, disease, wandering monsters, and many other varieties of evils visited upon the common folk of Faerun. These orphans are brought to temples of Myrkul and well cared for by the priests while being trained to become the next generation of Myrkulites.

In times past people were recruited to become priests of Myrkul from among the ranks of magic users that aspired to become budding necromancers, or those desiring to achieve lichdom.

Priests of Myrkul are to encourage and defend those who are interested in the necromantic pursuits. This involves providing advice to those studying undeath or the undead, perhaps giving them small insights that will improve their chances of success. In return the Anointed are to obtain a boon from their services that increase cooperation between the necromancer and the Church of Myrkul. The end goal is to convert these necromancers to become faithful followers of Myrkul in return for ever greater secrets in the arts of necromancy.

New Necromancers

Since Myrkul has arisen after the Second Sundering, his power is now not only held in Priests, but in arcane Necromancers as well. An arcane follower of Myrkul wields a flail that has a skull replacing the normal flail’s striking head.

  • Necromites are initiates who have not yet mastered arcane magic and rely on their flails in battle.
  • Skull Lashers are spellcasters who use magic to augment their combat abilities.
  • Masters of Souls delve deep into Myrkul’s secrets, allowing them to animate the dead and perform other grave magic.

Delvers into Lore. Cultists of Myrkul study rituals that allow them to force the souls of the dead into service, compelling them to answer questions and share forgotten lore. They seek out arcane secrets in ancient ruins, and attempt to steal spellbooks and other tomes from wizards outside of the cult.
