Somewhat of a waystop between a large mining settlement and a few small but peaceful valleys, Thornwick is a place for traders and craftsmen, more dealing in sturdy items for those proceeding to the Veils than anything particularly artistic. The most skilled at their crafts have the most sway in the circle, with the legal/political landscape being fairly disorganized and fluid. The highest "rank" is held by whatever family is able to afford what's colloquially referred to as "the big house," which doesn't frequently change hands but certainly isn't a guaranteed inheritance, either. Currently it's held by the larger family of leatherworkers. On top of the low cost of importing hides from any nomads willing to trade, the local traditions have undoubtedly helped solidify their place. It's rather rare for residents not to wear gloves, with the exception of children or any newcomers who haven't worked their crafts for long. Traditionally, children are gifted their first pair of working gloves at thirteen, though this may be delayed for financial reasons or if there are concerns that a safe amount of callus tissue hasn't built up yet.

Also of note is "the fire" (it seems none of the creative power in the circle was saved for naming things), a somewhat small but aggressively maintained central feature of light born from Winter's Sun Thorn. Representative of the locals, it's said to be a beacon for weary travelers that fends off the darkness and anything lurking there. People are welcome to draw fire from it for their own purposes. This is especially popular for starting funeral pyres, but some locals use it to simply warm their homes. Traveling away from the circle is particularly dangerous in winter, and few locals leave.

Fairness in trade is valued above all else. Charity is practically unheard of but a good way to cast great shame on less fortunate people if that's the aim—though the giver would likely be just as ostracized. The only exception is immediate intervention necessary to save a life, though anyone saved in such a fashion may still feel compelled towards repayment.
