Age of Dragon (Zeroth Age) < 0

  • In the mythic past, the world was one and the Progenitor Dragons, the first and greatest of dragon-kind, ruled all. The three most powerful (SiberysEberron, and Khyber) discovered (or created) the Draconic ProphecyKhyber and Siberys disagreed over the Prophecy and battled with one another. Khyber was victorious over Siberys, and sought to take control of the Prophecy, only to be attacked by EberronEberron wrapped his coils about Khyber, trapping the evil wyrm.

In the end, Siberys' shattered body became the Dragon Above - the glowing ring that surrounds the world. Khyber, still trapped in Eberron's coils, became the Dragon Below and the source for all great evils. Eberron healed the World Between by becoming one with it. Siberys called forth the next generation of dragons, Eberron created all manner of other living things, and Khyber spat out the fiends.

Age of Demons (First Age) -10,000,000 — -100,000

History

The Age of Demons began 10 million years ago, after the end of the Age of Dragons when Khyber, the Dragon Below, slew Siberys, the Dragon Above and he was in turn imprisoned in the coils of Eberron, the Dragon Between.

But as Khyber's last act, he unleashed hordes of demons upon the world, which rose up from the depths of Khyber. The first Children of Khyber, known as the Overlords, or Na-Vakti in Infernal, reigned supreme. These fiendish beings maintained personal domains on the world of Eberron for nine million years, where reality was whatever they wished.

Dragon–Fiend Wars

Some 1.5 million years ago, the blue dragon prophet Ourelonastrix and couatl sage Hezcalipa rediscovered the Draconic Prophecy. Over the course of thousands of millennia of conflict with individual fiends and their forces, the combined forces of dragons and couatl were finally able to bind the Overlords. It was during this time that the deeds of draconic heroes and villains possibly formed the inspiration behind the mythology of the Sovereigns, including for the Pyrine pantheon of Sarlona that split into the modern Sovereign Host and the Dark Six. Few recognize this today outside of followers of traditions like the Church of the Wyrm Ascendant, which has followers in Stormreach and among the dragonborn of Q'barra.

Led by Hezcalipa, the couatl sacrificed themselves to form the Silver Flame, a spiritual force with the strength of a god based on the Material Plane that held the Overlords in a permanent state of torpor.

The Overlords are bound to this day, imprisoned by the couatl's sacrifice within the Silver Flame. They operate through lesser fiends called rakshasa, which are collectively known as the Lords of Dust. The aboleth fled to the lightless depths where the dragons could not reach them. Dragons such as Rhashaak were dispatched to serve as guardians over the ruins of the Overlords to ensure these beings remained bound. The lizardfolk were affected by the touch of the couatl, and dream of this age so it will not come to pass again.

Thus ended the Age of Demons, and began the Age of Giants.

Creatures of the Age of Demons

On behalf of their Rajahs, the rakshasa held sway over the lands, while the aboleth in turn dominated the deep waters of the oceans. Krakens also held sway in the ocean. The mighty dragons and couatl were the only forces that could stand united against the individual Overlords.

Other lesser creatures of the time are known to include lizardfolk, and dinosaurs. The sahuagin have legends of champions defeating the fiendish Overlords, and presumably existed in some state during the Age of Demons. humans also existed as well, as the couatl blessed a devoted group of humans from Sarlona to become the first shulassakar and guard the couatl ruins in their absence, before the great sacrifice of the couatl to form the Silver Flame that ended the age.

  • Khyber -10000000

Khyber's fiendish offspring overrun the surface world, creating a hellish environment where rakshasas and night hags rule supreme.

  • Dragons rediscover the Prophecy and rise from their primitive state to oppose their demonic overlords. Unable to defeat the demonic hordes of the Dragon Below alone, the dragons ally with the couatls.

The common races, still in primitive states, hide from the godlike combatants and find a way to survive.

  • Silver Flame -100000

Recognizing their cause would otherwise be lost, the couatls sacrifice most of their number to bind the most powerful of the demon lords and the majority of the fiends back to Khyber. The couatls remain trapped for eternity with the fiends they bind. Victorious, the dragons retreat to Argonnessen to contemplate the Prophecy, ignoring the "lesser races."

Age of Giants (Second Age) -80,000 — -40,000

  • Giants -80000

The giants rise from the ruins of the Dragon-Fiend Wars to establish a civilization on the continent of Xen'drik. They enslave the primitive elves, which has the inadvertent effect of pulling the first of the common races out of their primitive state.

  • Dragons -75000

Dragons and dragonborn come to Q'barra to guard Haka'torvhak.

  • Dragons make contact with the giant kingdoms and teach the giants arcane magic.

The giants master the arcane arts, creating wonders unequaled even in the modern day. The elves - ignored by their giant masters - watch and learn.

  • Quori War -40000

The Quori invade Xen'drik from the plane of Dal Quor, the Plane of Dreams. After 1,000 years of battle, the giants call upon the most powerful magics of the dragons to throw Dal Quor out of planar alignment, forever sealing that plane away from Eberron. The resulting backlash shakes Xen'drik to its core and plunges large chunks of the continent beneath the sea.

  • 1,000 years after the end of the Giant-Quori War, Xen'drik is still suffering from the magical backlash of disrupting Dal Quor's planar orbit. Horrible curses and plagues still sweep through the land, and the elves use the opportunity to rebel.

A corps of elves - called the Phiarlan or "Spirit Keepers" - work as bards, scouts, and couriers during the elves rebellion against the giants.

In a desperate attempt to regain control of their slaves and save their dying civilization, the giants turn again to the most powerful draconic magics. Before they can unleash such destruction a second time, the dragons attack Xen'drik and the giant civilization collapses.

The Phiarlan spread the word of the elven prophet Aeren, gathering elves to flee Xen'drik for the sub-continent that would become known as Aerenal. The elves who chose to stay behind in Xen'drik go into hiding, becoming the drow.

Age of Monsters (Third Age) -38,000 — -4,000

The Age of Monsters is the span of time from about 38,000 years to about 5,000 years before the present day. It followed the Age of Giants and gave way to the Current Age in Eberron's timeline. This age was primarily marked by the ascent of the goblinoid kingdoms, which eventually formed the great Empire of Dhakaan on Khorvaire. New traditions also arose elsewhere, with the founding of the Undying Court by the elves of Aerenal, the rise of the Gatekeeper druids among the orcs of Khorvaire, and the migration of the dwarves to Khorvaire from the Frostfell. The Age of Monsters is considered to have come to an end as a result of the Daelkyr War and the subsequent collapse of the Dhakaani Empire.

Current Age (Fourth Age) > -3,100
