Sun Elf Skulls

Completed
Side Quest

Mayor William-Robert (upon his cousin finding the Band of Misfits sleeping in a haystack) offers the team one of the empty houses in the village in exchange for the skulls of ten Sun Elves as proof that they are capable of dealing with the village's problems.

Notably, the team originally intends to just collect the Mayor's alternate offer (wolf ears), but upon leaving the village they encounter a number of Sun Elves, which the four of them defeat with ease as they are only lightly armed. They also rescue a number of children who the Sun Elves had cornered as well as a local farmer who had had their leg torn off. However, tension begins to form within the group as Ash and Qau's poor background on the streets of Adisi and Syx's past as a frontline soldier clash with Shayla's more privileged and sheltered upbringing. Syx and Shayla argue while Qau tends to the hostages and Ash fails at attacking a Sun Elf patrol, and Syx discovers that Shayla is a royal bastard and feels robbed that she can never be Queen. The two come to an understanding and their friendship begins to form.

The team regroup and begins to piece together the situation. Multiple theories are put forward, but the general consensus is that the Sun Elves are likely a testbed for something much bigger. However, another argument erupts as to what to do with the hostages, with Qau and Ash wanting to help them back to the village immediately, Shayla wanting to leave them somewhere safe and help them back when they're finished, and Syx simply wanting to leave them and let them return to the village themselves. This quickly turns into another argument along the same "rich vs poor" lines as before, which Syx defuses, and convinces the others to leave the hostages - with the condition that the farmer is left a sword to defend himself and a crutch to help him walk back.

The mine's guards are cleared out very easily, and the team makes their way down into the mine. The entrance tunnel turns out to be trapped, with Ash falling into a pit. The next fight however with a Wild Magic surge leaving Shayla temporarily incapacitated by a terrifying vision of a possible future, which effects her so much that she loses control of her magic for the remainder of the fight. It ends equally awkwardly, with Syx and Qau arguing for the umpteenth time and Ash having to reconcile their usually stalwart leader in order for her to calm down enough to continue. Qau takes this time to, in the grip of the tail end of his Rage, attack Syx before Ash talks him down (giving herself a PTSD panic attack in the process.)

The final challenge is a skeleton knight which has the key to the second shaft, which contains a number more hostages, and this is more of a struggle with both Syx and Ash being notably injured.

Their mission successful, the team patches up their wounds, and on the way back takes some time to fix some of the issues between them which had made this so difficult. They are given a small house on the village's east side.

This overall bungling of this mission is notable for being a major factor in Shayla's decision to stop doing field work with the Band of Misfits.
