Aufling

Fey

Not much is known to the mundane humans about the Auflings. To be honest, not much is known by the Auflings ABOUT the Auflings. A lone Auf might not know themselves to be different from the humanoids they walk amongst, or may only know that they are somehow different.

Sometimes, a passing fairy might take an interest in a particular humanoid child. Whether for personal gain, such as for a servant, or a mortal caretaker or companion, or out of a twisted sense of generosity in an attempt to "save" the mewling infant from a life of mundanity. In any case, the Fairy will leave behind a sort of copy of the child where the child once was. This creature, known as an Auf, resembles the child physically in every way, but only begins their life with vague memories of whom they will call their family. The Auf might only learn about their mysterious abilities by accident, and all become intensely afeared of being outed as a non-humanoid. This fear is by design, for the fairy that created them wishes for their theft to be undiscovered.

An Auf who has learned of their nature will stop at nothing to hide it, utilizing their unique ability to shape change to their benefit. The shape changing that the Auf can perform is deeper than that of most shape changers. Auflings can TRULY assume a new form. This is to say that an Aufling will develop a true personality that accompanies a shape change that they frequent. Some might call it a deception, but to an Aufling, these personas are truly a part of them. One Aufling might have only two personas, while another Aufling, ten.

However, an Auf might instinctively shape change as well, using minor changes to their physicality, or developing a new visage on the spot, never to be assumed again. These transformations are not meant to be a part of an Aufling's identity, but are simply masks that an Aufling uses temporarily to achieve it's goals of obfuscating their abilities.

Auflings often find that the life of adventuring is highly beneficial to them. Traveling often and to new locations means that their personas are more free, and if they accidentally burn a persona, they haven't any reason to fear moving on quickly to a new place.

All Auflings share these traits

Ability Score Increase
You increase your Charisma score by 2 and any ability score of your choice by 1.

Age
An Aufling ages similarly to a human. On average living less than a century. Shape changing can hide the effects of aging, but not eliminate them.

Size
Your size is medium.

To set your height and weight randomly, start with rolling a size modifier:

Size modifier = 2d4

Height = 5 feet + 1 inch + your size modifier in inches

Weight in pounds = 115 + (2d4 × your size modifier)

Speed
Your base speed is 30 feet.

Shape Changer
As an action, you can change your appearance and your voice. You determine the specifics of the changes, including your coloration, hair length, and sex. You can also adjust your height and weight, but not so much that your size changes. You can make yourself appear as a member of another race, though none of your game statistics change. You can’t duplicate the appearance of a creature you’ve never seen, and you must adopt a form that has the same basic arrangement of limbs that you have. Your clothing and equipment aren’t changed by this trait. You stay in the new form until you use an action to revert to your true form or until you die.

Building the Truths
You have at least two personas, including the persona you were born into. These personas are a part of your identity, extensions of yourself. Develop as many of these personas as you like. While inhabiting these personas, you gain advantage of deception checks made to excuse away your personas existence. Should the persona be found out to be non humanoid by any sapient creature, the fear instilled in you at your birth by your fairy creator will prevent you from utilizing that persona again in that company. New personas may be developed over time, but all are developed as a defense mechanism to protect your true form; You are a shadowy black or ghostly white fey creature that vaguely resembles a humanoid with piercing yellow or red eyes and small sheep-like horns.

You may also utilize a temporary shape change, called a Mask, to obscure your identity. These Masks are decidedly NOT you who are, and as such, give you disadvantage on deception checks made to explain your existence; They are not at risk of being "Burned" and an Auf has no fear of that identity being discovered. You might forget your hair or eye color, or seem clumsy as your arms and legs are not proportions you recognize. A Mask is a temporary costume that you assume to work your way through or out of a situation.

Maintaining the Lies
You gain proficiency in Deception and one of the following skills. Insight, Intimidation, or Persuasion.

Languages
You can speak, read, and write Common and two languages of your choice, typically Sylvan and the language of the community you grew up in.
