Session 25: A Song for the Listener

Session

Continued from Session 24: The Name Within

Amos showed his sister Laybeth the papers Lady Zara fae'Fournius gave him about the cover up of their mother's death. Both were concerned about what their father would think, and decided not to tell him anything. Laybeth wanted to look into it, but was more concerned about their current situation with Cephius er'Ceasian.

Meriel wanted to go looking for Kith, who had been missing since Mordenkai's death. Zarin stayed behind, volunteering to be disguised as the prisoner Cephius while the real Cephius was moved without the knowledge of Captain Gaura. The group did not entirely trust the imperial captain or his mage friend. Oak stayed to keep an eye on the real Cephius while Laybeth and the Vigilants stayed with Zarin.

The group visited Ragor first, hoping he would know where to find Kith. Ragor looked like he had been packing for a trip. When asked if he was leaving, he answered that it depended on what was learned from Cephius. Ragor said he had not seen Kith recently, and that he last knew she went to the Giving Hands. However, he did know that before Allan found her, Kith spent a lot of time in the neighborhood of Darin's Folly.

Using his streetwise knowledge and talking to the locals, Amos's true skills shone. He learned that Artellus Prusun was also looking for Kith.  Amos was able to track Kith to a tavern called the Three Chords. They saw and heard Kith singing from a stage in the back of the tavern. Some of patrons were merely enjoying the music, but others were raptly listening with their eyes nearly glazed over. Meriel talked to Kith; Kith was afraid that her singing had hurt Mordenkai and had run away. She was worried that maybe her power makes people go to sleep and not wake up again. Meriel asked Kith a few questions about Mordenkai. Kith told her that the amulet he had given Meriel was from when he was a soldier and before he became a Listener.

Meriel convinced Kith to come with her to see Cephius back at the Tradefair Seat of Law. There, Kith sang to Cephius, which seemed to shake him from his madness. Captain Gaura was brought in to help ask questions. Cephius said that he was raised by Hezra as one of her many long-range plans to topple the Sentran Empire. She managed to make him look like Prince Tobias; Cephius doesn't know what he actually looks like any more. He doesn't know how she did it, but it was very painful and apparently permanent. Amos theorized that with Cephius's imperial blood, it might have been possible to replace Tobias.
