A Gathering Storm

Campaign

This story set in the Great Desert, follows the unlikely quintet of Uechi, Dimitra Adamos, Xil Wrenlow, Unknown and Blanca as they travel to stop an encroaching Greenskin invasion of The Beastfolk Heartlands. Along the way they encounter many dangers, including Giant Scorpions and The Glassed Lands.

Chronologically it follows A Taste of Evil and is planned to be followed by Beneath the Mountain.

The group began the campaign by meeting their employer, Afzal Jabbar Chief of Redpride Village, and his main advisors - Seth al-Rawaz, Erastos Ironhoof, Moirin Mhic Macdha and Fatiyah Jabbar. They are first sent to identify the location of some missing scouts, and after finding them dead, they are then sent to defeat Greenskin scouts and capture a hostage for questioning.

As the party investigated the Desert, they eventually ambushed a Greenskin scouting force, taking hostage a weak Hobgoblin named Wretch "Shadowborn". Wretch revealed that instead of in a duel, Afzal had murdered the previous Chief of Tribe Threefinger (and Wretch's father), Aazhag while he was praying. The quintet journeyed to the Threefinger camp, and met the new Chief of the tribe, Zibrust as well as his advisors Coldtooth and the Axemother. Through some peyote and magic fuelled visions, they came to the conclusion that Wretch's story is correct, but that there seemed to be something off about the Afzal they see.

Returning to Redpride, the party confronted Afzal and come to the realisation that he was being mind controlled by Moirin Mhic Macdha, who they arrest. After her arrest, she revealed to Xil that she was a member of the Wood Elf Scouts and she was trying to avert the Shadowborn Prophecy as Zibrust was destined to burn large parts of the Imperial Troll Empire to the ground. Though she attempted to escape with the aid of Xil, she was executed by Afzal, though Xil used illusion magic to fake a resurrection.

Through some delicate negotiations between Redpride and Threefinger, a new duel was announced between Afzal and Zibrust at Stubborn Rock, to settle things and end the bad blood between the tribes. By this time the Orc named Hervok, a claimant to be Chief of Tribe Thundersteel, had entered Zibrust's camp as an ally and often acted to goad the Hobgoblin. Zibrust narrowly won the duel, but Xil challenged him afterwards, which Zibrust accepted at the goading of Hervok. Xil killed Zibrust, causing Wretch to emerge from invisibility and unleash his innate sorcerous powers to kill Xil.

Hervok attempted to steal the Threefinger Spear from Zibrust's corpse and claim rulership of Threefinger, but Dimitra, Erastos, Coldtooth and the Axemother stood up to him. Coldtooth and the Axemother were both killed in the attempt, but Dimitra held him off and cut off his arm. Wretch finished him off by liquefying him with fire magic and claimed the Thunderhammer and Tribe Thundersteel for his own. As Wretch used fire magic, the smoke formed a hooded cloak around him and his eyes began to glow red, revealing him to be the true Shadowborn. Wretch ended the campaign heading east, seeking revenge on the Empire as revealed in his epilogue.

The epilogues also reveal that Moirin Mhic Macdha knew that Wretch was the Shadowborn all along, and was trying to send him against the Empire, tricking Xil into fulfilling the prophecy. Dimitra also told Erastos that she's expecting a child, and asks if she can name him after Darius Adamos. Finally, The Nameless One and Dezrael (wearing Leannan's face) are shown playing a chess match, in which one of Dezrael's many pawns crosses the board and is upgraded to an Avatar.
