Following the events of their near-fatal wolf hunt several days prior, Shayla quits Team ToTaN to focus on her political career, the remaining three members stumble on a camp which turns out to belong to Kadar, who confronts them after Ash and Qau assume it belongs to bandits and try to steal his breakfast. Ash freaks out when Kadar reveals who he is, but slowly calms down. He convinces them to keep him alive and keep him with the team by stating that he knows that Ash's estranged sister is still alive. Kadar is still tied up.

The team heads deeper into the woods, hoping to find the source of the local outbreak of undead. They are attacked by a pair of skeletons, one a Troll Druid wielding a warhammer and the other an Expansion Lesser Catfolk Assassin. Ash is stabbed in the stomach and the neck, forcing her to sit out most of the fight, though she does land the final blow in the fight after the Druid turns into a skeletal dire bear, after which she promptly passes out from blood loss. She does, however, pick up an antique Elven dagger from the Catfolk skeleton upon being healed. 

The team encounter an abandoned temple, and the guards prove to be much tougher than the skeletons they had encountered previously. Ash, still severely injured, adapts her fighting style to compensate for this, and this style change works so well that she permanently adopts the resulting hit-and-run style as her default from this mission on. The team are all minorly injured in this fight but fend off the guards with little effort and enter the temple.

Inside the temple is a swarm of dire rats, which Ash sets on fire with an oil bomb, and the team's second encounter with Bard Quinnlee. The fight is difficult and everyone continues to take on increasing amounts of damage but manage to eventually scare him off with attacks. 

In the entrance room, they set up camp, and Syx goes on first watch. Ash is on second, and partway through a maid, later revealed to be Bard's, knocks on the door into the back rooms and offers her and Qau tea. They drink it and it causes Ash to vomit, waking the others up and causing the maid to attack Qau then flee back in, at which point the team barricades the door for the rest of the night. On Qau's watch, they are attacked by more dire rats which the team dispatches without trouble.

Following the rats, the team decide to get it over and done with and enter the hallway behind the blocked door. Ash and Qau are injured further attempting to defuse a pair of axe traps, and the storeroom at the end turns out to have been turned into a makeshift study by Bard, inside which several of his minions are hidden. Qau is severely injured and knocked unconscious and Ash is hit in the stomach with a crossbow bolt at point-blank, a wound which almost proves fatal, but together Kadar and Syx manage to overpower the three minions with a combination of expert swordplay and magical attacks, after which Kadar heals their two fallen comrades and they loot the study. 

Inside the study are a number of Bard's grimoires which are taken by Syx and later given to Shayla, a pair of Bard's winter boots which were taken by Qau and are still worn by him, and a magical amulet which also was taken by Syx and given to Shayla.
