The Call of Atropus: Omens (Chapter 2)

Completed
Campaign

Story Rewards/Consequences:
Through the Night:

Quatre chose to allow the suffering spirit of Sarinel Laruthien, a former Netherese Paladin of Selune, to enter into her company until she returned to the material plane. By doing so, she granted the spirit safe passage to the afterlife, and to avoid the wretched horrors of the Plane of Shadow. Sarinel’s spirit is forever grateful to you, and will surely tell Selune of your deeds.

Stone and Shadow The first seal has been broken, bringing the “Herald of Atropus” one step closer to being released. The second seal, thanks to Odom’s divination, is located somewhere in Phlegethon, beneath Howler’s Crag, in the Windswept Depths of Pandemonium.

Corrupted Summons Melody's Construct Spirit became corrupted by the Plane of Shadow. The next time she casts Summon Construct, there is a 5 percent chance on a percentile die that it is hostile to Melody and attacks. In such a case, it exists regardless of concentration.

The party of Quatre, Relia Mallas, Odom, AlmCrow, and Melody travelled through the crossing, and found themselves in an utterly alien and hostile environment. Around them, they found a warped and deformed version of Neverwinter. Where merchant stands once stood, they found enormous pens filled with zombies for hire. The guards had been replaced with ghasts and other dread beings of the night. In addition, where the markets were once found, the party found horrific merchant carts filled with everything from gnome hands to dead bodies to unknown serums of ooze. The party spoke with a merchant, and learned that one individual might be able to provide information about the so-called Tomb of Midnight. Their contact’s name was Alastair, who was said to often be found hanging around the Thayan Outpost in the Northwestern quarter. Quatre was very offput by the idea of heading to a Thayan outpost, or any place that would be friendly to the Red Wizards of Thay, due to her personal, and quite familial, relationship with the Thayan necromancers. The party eventually found Alastair, and he told them that many denizens of Evernight often placed bets on who would survive entry to the “Tomb of Midnight” which he explained was located around 15 miles or so from the city. The party took this information, and headed out through the city gates, journeying through the Burning Wood. Along the path, Alm spotted a body, lying prone on the ground. After investigating the body, they found that the armor and robes indicated Netherese origin. The body seemed to be withered and rapidly decomposing. They then found a fleeing human, who informed them that “the mage has attempted to achieve lichdom and has likely succeeded.” The party then heard wails of terror and anguish, and found what appeared to be a Boneclaw. They soon realized that the lichdom had not been attained, and that the process had failed severely. After dispatching with the creature, they headed further into the gloom. Quatre came upon another body, this one of a Netherese Paladin of Selune, who had been slain by a Thayan blade. The spirit of the body manifested itself to her, and explained that its name was Sarinel Laruthien, and asked for passage out of the Plane of Shadow. Quatre accepted the responsibility of shepherding the soul. It entered her mace, permanently consecrating it, and granting her abilities while the soul remained. Alm found a mysterious cloak, dedicated to the god Mask, Lord of Shadows. Relia Mallas stumbled upon a rather strange blade, which seemed to be formed of the essence of the Shadowfell itself. The party heard an approaching shriek, and remembered that Ostur had warned them of sighting of “Dark Riders” or “Riders in Black” that were to be avoided at all costs. With a bit of quick thinking, Melody created a hidden space with Rope Trick which helped the party to survive the creature, as it passed them by. They then rested briefly, pushing through the essence of the plane, and located the Tomb of Midnight. After venturing inside, they found that the first seal had been broken, and struggled against creatures of terror and dread that resided within. Melody called upon a tidal wave of holy water, Alm and Crow utilized their advanced martial training, Relia and Quatre sliced through a cloaked being with no discernable form, and Odom invoked the power of his arcane ward to shield the party from harm, saving their lives on more than one occasion. After dispatching with the creatures, Odom channeled his Divination abilities to learn the location of the second seal: Phlegethon, beneath Howler’s Crag, in the Windswept Depths of Pandemonium. After returning to the material plane, the spirit of Sarinel headed for the afterlife, thanking Quatre for her help. The party returned to the Order of the Gauntlet to show them what they had learned.
