The Call of Atropus: The Dripping Dagger (King of the Golden Hall, Chapter 2)

Completed
Campaign

The party headed to Dagger Falls, as they were called for by Maren. Lucen, their driver, arrived outside of Hawthorne and picked them up. They travelled for 3 weeks, heading South of the Anaurouch, careful to avoid its treacherous dunes. Lucen spoke to the party, explaining that a guard of Dagger Falls has been behaving erratically, but he did not have much specific information beyond that, as he had never met the guard himself. Saint ate a cupfull of salt, to see how it tasted, and found that it was rather dry. Silial summoned several gallons of water to cleanse his pallet. They journeyed further, coming up on the high Desertsmouth mountains, while Ava analyzed the party in secret, learning their alignment. Coming to the town gates, the guards requested a fee, which was paid for in full by Jade, as she paid for the cost of entry. The party headed into the gates, and found that the townsfolk were suspicious of outsiders, hesitant to speak and quick to avert their eyes. They headed for the Red Rock Inn. Upon entering, they spoke with the older woman who runs the establishment, as well as another worker, named Fredrick. They met with Maren, who informed them that the guard they were being called to investigate was named Cantel Ripter. Apparently, he had been seen heading out at strange hours of the night, venturing Northeast into the woods, and then returning the next day. He would have a wild look in his eyes, and would behave strangely, shutting down merchant shops, arresting children, and screaming randomly at people. The party gathered as much information as they could, before hiding out in a small garden. They watched for movement from the man’s house, and they found it. Around 2:30 in the morning, they found him venturing out. Avery, Ava’s familiar, headed into his house to check for any suspicious activity. She found several Zhentarim badges. With Silial’s nature magic, they headed stealthily into the woods after him, trailing behind. They watched him seem to head into the mountainside, but then discovered, using arcane energy, that the rock was partially illusory. They pushed through it, and found that, with Manny’s aid, there was a deep cave entrance behind it. They travelled through the darkness, and came upon 3 statues, a human, an elf, and a half-orc. They started to realize the horrific truth: these had been people, turned to stone, when there came a great booming sound. Strange, metallic insect creatures scraped across the ground, and behind them, a blue being of terror: a Basilisk. The party blasted, burned, and whipped their way through them, and Silial and Saint were nearly turned to stone, had fate not been in their favor. Saint’s armor and blade were corroded, and the party began to collect themselves, trying to take a breath before they venture further, and deeper, into the dark expanse.
