Feast of Fools

Festival
1-4-12

This major Catfolk event follows Saint Fatima's Day, and is celebrated with huge street parties, feasts, street performances and carnival games, but are always opened with a mock tournament, usually containing ridiculous events like apple-bobbing, cheese-rolling, egg-on-spoon races, sack races, shoe throwing, sprint races through mud, obstacle courses and gurning. The winner of the tournament is crowned the honorary head of festivities, usually referred to as the "Pope of Fools", who at the feast in the evening will sit at the head of the table, then retain the mock title until next year's festival (however this title is meaningless and intended to be purely for the amusement of both the "Pope" themselves and others. People who are made the Pope of Fools are given a large conical paper hat painted with a gold letter "P" and decorated elaborately (and deliberately in an eye-offending manner) and a large garland made of garden weeds, which they will wear for the rest of the festivities, and are allowed to keep permanently afterwards. Such festivities are held worldwide amongst Catfolk populations (though people of any race are allowed and may be crowned the Pope of Fools.)
