The Republic of Haven

Government

The Republic of Haven Towne is the most powerful political entity in the The Thousand Islesruling over all of Bonny Isle and at the center of hegemony that includes the The Twins and many client states in the The Bormas and The Norshield Islands

It is organized as a merchant republic ruled by the Governor of Haven, who rules for life but is elected by the 480 member Great Council of Haven. In recent years the Governor has devolved into little more than a figurehead, all the power resides with the nine members of the council of Sea Lords of Haven, who represent The Merchant Houses of HavenThis oligarchy of merchant families is extremely well entrenched in Haven Towne and the coastal cities, some of them trace their heritage to the eastern  mainland and a few all the way to Annwyn Empire.

Culturally and ethnically, while most of the city dwellers have some Annish blood, other than a few noble families they are mostly a polyglot (called Creole) and their culture is fairly unique and homegrown.

Inland however is a bit of a different story, the mountainous highlands are still very much the domain of the original islanders (First People) and the government’s rule is relatively light. Dark magic and Voodoo are commonplace here and it is wise to tread lightly.

Haven is first and foremost a maritime and merchant nation. The ships of Haven are said to be without numbers and it’s merchants travel far and wide, bringing great wealth back to the island. The ships of Haven are said to be the best in the Isles, or at least the biggest, and the Harbor and The Armory of Haven Towne is without equal. In addition to its extensive merchant fleet, Haven also maintains a huge fleet of war galleys, which it uses to enforce its will across the Islands.  While these galleys have proven relatively ineffective in the wilder waters of the Etish Sea or the Reaches, they are extremely powerful in the shallow, relatively peaceful seas of the Inner Archipelago.
