Skull River Bay is one of the principal towns and trading centers in the Northern Reach. Lying as it does at the far south eastern edge of that archipelago, it serves as the last civilized gateway into a wild and relatively unexplored region. It’s proximity to the more populated islands of the Inner Archipelago makes it a major trade nexus.

The town, bay and river all get their name from a large rock formation in the shape of a human skull located at the river's mouth. The town lies on a small bay on the north central coast of the Island of St Catherine, where the Skull River meets the sea.
