Overview

Bonny Island is the largest island in the The Inner Archipelago and in the The Thousand Isles at approximately 300,000 square miles in area. It is entirely ruled by The Republic of Haven with it's capital at Haven Towne.

Geography

Bonny Island is a volcanic island, the huge volcanoes Bynack Tor forms the backbone of the island. At 20,000 feet high, this mountain is the largest in The Thousand Isles. Several other much smaller volcanoes make up the Central Highlands, the vast remote jungle that forms the center of the island. A large coastal plain rings the isle, generally extending inward no more then 30-50 miles at which point the ground rises steeply to over 3000 feet in elevation. Multiple rivers flow from the central highlands down to the coast, carving lush and fertile river valleys on their way.

Climate

The climate and Weather of Bonny Island, as is typical of the Thousand Isles, is characterized by a two-season year, tropical and uniform temperatures everywhere (except at high elevations), is relatively wet especially in the rainy season, with high annual rainfall and high relative humidity.

The trade wind blows more or less along the length of the island from April through June, and then again in the opposite direction from September through November.

This means that the western parts of the island tend to be wet in springtime and dry in the fall, while the converse is true of the eastern slopes

History

Before the arrival of the Annwyn Empire, Bonny Isle was populated exclusively by the First People. The An heavily settled Bonny Isle's coasts, especially the region areound Haven Towne and gradually the First People ceded the coastal areas as they were pushed inland to the central highlands.

With The Recall, a period of partial economic and social collapse and international anarchy began (called  The Interregnum). The First People came down from their mountain fastnesses to raid and plunder the now undefended Annish settlements. Even Haven Towne itself experienced such raids, which forced the building of Madrigals Wall to protect the city.

After a period of time, the remnants of the empire rallied, first defending their cities and strengthening their fortifications and then eventually taking the fight into the Highlands. In the year 902 the entirety of Bonny Island came under the control of The Republic of Haven, an event that is generally seen as the end to the anarchic period known as The Interregnum and the beginning of the Era of Independence.

However the control of the Republic has always been tenuous in the remote reaches of the Jungle Highlands, and the old ways of the First People still dominate the cultural life of the inhabitants of this area.

Demographics

Ethnically the majority of the island are mixed race humans called Creole. Most of the population lives along the coasts in cities, the two largest of which are Haven Towne and Hollyrose on the opposite side of the island. The cities are cosmopolitan and culturally owe much to the Annwyn Empire. However inland the old ways dominate and the blood of the First People runs much stronger, as does the cultural influence of those people.

Orthodox Church of Mithras is the largest religion in the Island, with most Islanders claiming membership in this sect. However a belief in Voodoo is also very widespread even in the cities. Many Islanders hold both belief systems simultaneously, a sitatiuion they have no problem reconciling, but that drives the priests of Mithras crazy.
