The Karatgurk are seven sisters all sired by Baiame with a human woman. All of them were exceedingly beautiful, for which the evil spirit Julana attempted to rape them. A furious Baiame banished him with enormous gusts of air, though Julana survived, for which the former occasionally resumes his hunt by hurling the sands around (explaining the Outback's violent sandstorms). The Karatgurk were lifted to heaven for protection, where they remain virgin and radiant, forming the Pleiades constellation.
Virgin priestesses throughout Oceanyka are said to be protected by the Karatgurk.
