Ascension

Festival
0-2-24

A day of recognition for the sacrifice made by Mytros. Celebrated by the settler races throughout Thylea, the day is, unsurprisingly, most popular in The City of Mytros itself.

Ascension is marked by large public feasts, alongside wine, dancing and plays. In
Mytros, large scale, non-lethal, gladiatorial fights are also held in the Goddess' honour. The winners are crowned Mytros’ champions for the year, receive special blessings from The Temple of the Five, and are asked to uphold Mytros’ values across Thylea.

It is commonly believed that no coin or trade should be accepted for goods and services this day, with bad luck befalling those who still try to take undertake these sorts of transactions. (Over the past few decades, some have begun to get around this with ‘promise notes’ - written oaths promising to pay for the goods the next day. Culturally, these are frowned upon as being disrespectful, but they do seem to work for the purpose of avoiding Mytros’ ire.)

As a result of this tradition, many businesses close for the day, though there are a few exceptions: inns will waive lodging fees that day for guests already staying with them and provide a free meal; services such as tailors and smiths may take on small jobs for free from those in need; and it is a tradition in some of the merchant's areas in Mytros to open for the morning and give away small sweets and trinkets to local children.

Other smaller traditions also mark Ascension: “By her sacrifice” replaces common greetings and farewells, and it is considered good luck to wear gold and silver, with followers of Mytros often having full outfits sporting these colours for the occasion. Small gold and silver ribbons, to be worn in the hair, around the wrist or pinned to clothes, are given away freely at the Temple of the Five and at shrines to the Goddess.
