A band of adventurers including the cleric who would eventually become The First Caliph were the foundation, centuries ago, of The The Legion of Hatterwol, and ante-date by hours in fact the dedication of the site of Hatterwol’s first Temple of Lugh.

Slain to a soul in the Caliphate's first foray into the Forsaken Strand, Host IV was never reconstituted.  An obelisk monument to their memory stands on the plaza across from The Brilliant Basilica.  600 were lost that day, and their memory is a current running strongly in The Caliphate's commitment to eventually triumph over the forces of evil and necromancy that rule The Forsaken Strand.

The names of ever member of the host are called out in a midnight ceremony once per year.

Demonym: The Loud Ones, The Songbirds

The Host dedicated to instruction, training, and the development of skill in the art of war, Host VII is the initial home of every warrior to serve in the Legion.  Here they are assessed for natural talents, which are fostered, and evaluated for natural weaknesses, which are addressed with even more training.  The Host is itself the mother to several smaller colleges which research and experiment strategies, tactics, deceptions, and techniques.  Nearly every member of this host is an experienced officer, many seconded to Host VII from other units.

While as a unit possessed of fewer battle-honors than other Hosts, The Lanterns wield great authority within The The Legion of Hatterwol, for their wisdom and insights into warfare, and for the skills they impart to each warrior that passes through.

Demonym: The Salties, The Soggies

Hatterwol has no specific marine threats.  Piracy is limited in extent, and largely confined to the eastern and souther reaches of The Fell Zee, and nearly non-existent on The Outer Zee.

As such, the nation maintains no consistent naval levies.  No Caliphate ships are classified as warships, and indeed, only a scant few are maintained as couriers.

However, the concepts of marine warfare are not ignored altogether.  At 1500 souls, Host IX represents the entirety of the nation's engagement in naval matters, split between the practice of naval infantry tactics, and troops with skills related to sailing, meteorology, aquatic intelligence, logistics, and combat.  Largely stationed in Craehyrst, with a few manning outposts on The Troedar Cape, members of this host may serve as marine infantry, scouts, escorts, and occasionally as expeditionary troops.

Demonym: The Windies, The Stormies, The Blowhards

Host X has been deployed to The Forsaken Strand for several years, as a result of which has sustained greater losses than other Hosts.  Also the most the unit most decorated in the legion, although in many cases members are decorated posthumously.

Works closely with Host XV, The Devourer of Shadow.

Demonym: The Brothers

Host XII is comprised solely of troops born outside Hatterwol. 

The Caliphate's attractiveness as a destination, stability, and prosperity, have brought many forth from far across Mantea.  In order that the nation may benefit from those with military skill and acumen, and in an unusually wise effort to pre-empt racism, the formation of a unit comprised solely of immigrants was decreed.

Host XII also serves as a "companion Host" for units from allies of the Caliphate of Hatterwol, such as Val Fajeryn Outlanders, who train and serve with them for periods, and reciprocally take on soldiers of The Caliphate.

Host XII is noted for its ferocity and loyalty to The Caliph, and is the 2nd most decorated Host in the Legion, despite being considerably newer.

Demonym: The Jaws

Host XV does not match other hosts in size or in purpose.  Numbering barely 300, this Host Constitutes essentially a mobile magical college, nearly all its complement are worshippers of Lugh, and nearly all are magical adepts of one variety or another.

With the advent of the holding action in The Forsaken Strand, it was apparent that combined arms of mundane and magic would be required.  Host XV was founded as a staff for tower support, to enable and sustain the magical energies manipulated by The Caliph and The Ulema of Lugh as they fought to maintain the frontier.
