Mothfolk, also called lepidites among scholars, are an intelligent race so magical they are often mistaken for demons by the uneducated.

Lacking vocal cords, mothfolk are mute, and speak a language of gestures and signs. While none have the ability to speak human languages, some use magic to communicate. Their written language is quite simple to learn. Lunar mothfolk sometimes use daemonhosts to communicate.

They are between 3-4 feet tall, weighing 1-2 stone at the most. They fly well enough naturally, but often augment nature with magic to reach great speeds.

They grow from larvae into cat-sized caterpillar creatures, and eventually metamorphose into their adult forms. Depending on early diet, their color, size, temperament, and magical ability can vary to a great degree. In lands where coca leaves grow in abundance, mothfolk are often wild and aggressive, yet charming and intelligent.

All have an affinity for either sunlight or moonlight. The preference is always one or the other, and culturally acquired. Only Solar mothfolk are thought to be reasonably peaceable. Lunar mothfolk are often demon worshippers, and should not be trusted.

Mothfolk have fairly brief lifespans (14 years at most) and lack natural healing of damaged limbs. When old or mortally injured, one will typically opt for ritual burning. Despite lunar or solar cultural preference, all mothfolk love light.

They tend not to rely on tools beyond flint knives and rope, which they use quite expertly, even making rather advanced recurve bows with flint arrowheads.

Some build their homes in trees, while others make house in abandoned ruins or illusory structures. Grander mothfolk homes often include a conservatory of luminous flora and fauna, and are richly lit with candles. They love fireflies, and breed them as pets for their light. They treasure glow worms and glow-shrooms, and harvest both for various ceremonies or decorations.

healed magically in order to recover.

Chitin Armor - Although unable to wear normal armor, mothfolk have an exoskeleton that provides 1 LAR.

Light Affinity - Choose either moonlight or sunlight at character creation. While basking in that light, you may ignore 1d of difficulty modifiers for free.
