The Shadowfell, also known as the Plane of Shadow, is one of many planes of existence in the world of Tolria. It existed as sort of counterpart to the material plane, in the sense that it was a reflection, or "echo", of the Prime Material Plane. Unlike the material plane, howeverm it was a bleak, desolate place full of decay and death. Shades, spectres, and wraiths roamed the nearly endless plains of shadowlands, many of which represented shadows of creatures and people which live or once lived within the material world. Ruling the Shadowfell are the Shadowlords, powerful warrior champions and mages, which ascended from obscurity within the Shadowfell and defeated the previous shadowlord to inherit their unnatural powers. Such powers over the realm which are said to have been stolen from the ancient Floating City of Netheril, give the Shadowlords uncanny powers and near complete control over various arcane aspects of the realm which they ruled. Within the shadowfell resides a darker, and more twisted pantheon of deities, comprised of the Raven Queen, the Night Mother Nyx, and Mask. As a part of the Continuum Crystal Cosmology, the Shadowfell was a minor elemental plane formed from the negative element of death which flows from the plane of Oblivion and seeps into the Shadowfell, perpetually corrupting it.
