(Following Brain Freeze )

The changing prints in the snow, the only path not menaced by the strange creature "swimming" beneath the drifts lead directly to the prison called Revel's End, so recently the place from which the Sewer-side Squad escaped after being associated with Vaelish Gant in Bryn Shander

The group, in need of supplies and the safety afforded by the tracks decides to trust in the words of Speaker Shane's representative who spoke to them in Termalaine of their accusations having been lifted and apologies offered. (After all, none were killed in the escape - so perhaps some forgiveness?)

What transpired at the prison is contained in the following report to the Lords Alliance by an envoy they sent that arrives by sky-ship (a long oval zeppelin-like balloon with a pair of fin-like extensions beneath, between which is a comfortable cabin woven from spider silks). Estilël, a high elf cleric, arrives the morning after the defeat of the creature, tethering the ship to the high tower and accompanied by a dozen elite warriors, who secure the facility. The group has come from the city of Silverymoon, in response to a failure of Warden Marta Marthannis to report to a monthly meeting via a Sending chamber.

of Angharradh, second of the Seldarine

Report from Revel's End

The accounts in this report are based upon interviews with the prison's liberators (who, strangely, were once imprisoned due to mistaken identity) as well as interrogations of the dead by the necromancer Dex, and three sole survivors found hiding in the prison's hospital facilities, near the elevator to the pier on the Sea of Moving Ice. Circumstances did not afford time or resources to deeply interrogate the adventurers, and their cooperation  and reports were accepted as genuine by the divinations of the Goddess. We returned them to the town of Bryn Shander on our return to Silverymoon.

Summary of Status

  • Survivors: Found alive within the building upon arrival were only eight humanoids,
    • prison staff: Only three remained alive within the buildings themselves: Carter (human guard), Burke (half-elf guard), and Mjenir (human druid hired by the prison to assist in its harsh survival in the north).  Fourteen escaped via the elevator, taking a ship out to a small settlement down the coast.
    • prisoners: none,
    • (others) a group of adventurers from Luskan, composed of a rather suspicious collection of species: a half-Drow bard ("Zaknalimar"), a Shadar-kai ("Sudon"), a Tiefling diviner ("Alyks Askaria"), a Unknown changeling necromancer, I suspect to be a Hexblood ("Dex"), and a Reghed barbarian ("Phantom").
  • Confirmed deceased: We have taken pains to fully account for the registered prisoners to be absolutely clear regarding those who may have exploited this event to escape or to be falsely declared dead.  Given the nature of the deaths, I conferred with the Goddess whose omens advised against any attempt to return the souls once bound to these corpses to this plane.
    • Prison staff: All remaining guards, upkeep servants, scribes, cooks, medics, stable hands, and craftsmen (70 in number) as well as Xaothdri (Spectator guard of the armory).
    • Absolution Council: Jil Torbo (halfling, Baldur's Gate), Voss Andterton (human, Neverwinter), Kriv Norixius (silver dragonborn, Daggerford), Warden Marta Marthannis (human, Waterdeep)
    • Prisoners (by conviction): 32 deceased
      [Enslavement: Prisoner 133, Prisoner 150, Prisoner 152],
      [Espionage: Prisoner 008, Prisoner 135, Prisoner 189, Prisoner 190],
      [Assassination/Conspiracy: Prisoner 99, Prisoner 140, Prisoner 141, Prisoner 182, Prisoners 187-190, Prisoner 219, Prisoner 220],
[Reckless Adventuring: Prisoners 221-226, Prisoner 229],
      [Forbidden Research: Prisoner 001, Prisoner 042, Prisoner 99, Prisoner 100, Prisoner 217],
[Organized Thievery & Piracy: Prisoner 153, Prisoner 154, Prisoner 229]
  • Missing / undetermined: Prisoner 002, Prisoner 237 Vaelish Gant (note: presumed associate of adventurers)
  • Structural assessment: Significant structural damage to walls and ceilings, including water leaks now creating ice fissures creating further damage. Occupying the tower not advised.  Guards securing pier and entry only, pending repair team.

Recommendations to Lords Alliance High Council

  1. TOP PRIORITY TASK A: Coordinate with The Harpers to investigate/determine status of Prisoner 002, designated Fugitive Alpha.
  2. URGENT TASK B: Contract valley dwarves of Kelvin's Cairn for immediate structural support.
  3. URGENT TASK C: Communicate bounty on recapture of Prisoner 237, designated Fugitive Beta.
(1000gp live, 20gp information leading to capture, 100gp for proof of permanent death)
  4. TASK D: Geomancy required to employ earth elementals in full structural repair, coordinate with dwarven stonesmiths.
  5. TASK E: Recruit new guards to oversee reconstruction from ranks of Lords Alliance strongholds.
  6. TASK F: Redirect new prisoners' locations to remote sites within the cities.
  7. TASK G: Inform appropriate leaders, judges, and kin of deceased.
  8. TASK H: Donate proper reparations to families of deceased staff and Absolution Council.
  9. TASK I: Investigate and classify creature's race and capabilities - contact Candlekeep scholars.
  10. TASK J: Depending on assessment of creature's race and capabilities, consider investigating place of origin (reported "tomb" by adventurers).

Record of Events

Timing is usually estimated, all verbal accounts should be considered subjective. Reported objective observations written in bold.

  • Frostday, 7th Ches, 1492: Creature of unknown origin arrives at Revel's End. Heavy combat at front gate and nearby rooms. Steeds flee the stables, several guards killed, creature takes form of guards and begins infiltration by careful deception. Records note the attack blamed on Ice Troll, shattered / melted without corpse to verify. Prison carries on operations with attempted repairs and securing of front entry.
  • Sunday the 11th: By this time most of the guards are replaced by the forms of the creature. No impact on prisoners or the Absolution Council. Records indicate widespread paranoia among the prison staff. Investigations by Warden Marthannis note many irregularities, but nothing sufficient for report or action. Prison staff offered a tenday's paid leave bonus to carry on.
  • Moonday the 12th: Prisoners add to the report of paranoia. Records attribute this to opportunism to try to exploit the guards' fears for clemency in reduced sentences, transfer to other locations, special privileges, and malicious intent to amplify the fears of the guards. Likely at this point several prisoners have been killed and replaced by the creature.
  • Foursday the 19th: Prison-wide battle - creature makes its move on the upper tower. Prisoners are released from cells, falling victim to the creature who employs them as reinforcements. Fall of the warden and council over the next day or two. End of records. Pockets of resistance hold out, but none know who to trust. Tests by fire employed to prove remaining free of its control.
  • Threesday the 26th: Arrival of adventurer party, tracking the creature from what they report as a recently-opened tomb. Over the next day their investigations lead to confrontation with the creature. Generously employing fire and weapons of the Shadar-kai, the creature appears overcome. Facility is swept for lingering threats and survivors unite.
  • Flamesday the 28th: Arrival of Lords Alliance Envoy Airship, investigation and report follows with cooperation of the adventurers.

Assessment

  • Adventuring party: As is not unusual, this group is withholding information, has acted opportunistically and possibly committed theft. However, as is also not unusual for adventurers, the group has proven brave, helpful, and were effective in eradicating a powerful and deadly threat. Members of the group already hold alliances with organizations precluding invitation into the Lords Alliance. Most strikingly, the fey necromancer Dex Shadow and the tiefling wizard Alyks Askaria belong to the Arcane Brotherhood. The half-Drow Zaknalimar and the Shadar-kai Sudon Corvus serve in the Bregan D'aerthe mercenary company. The Reghed barbarian Phantom has an outward appearance and manner of speech that would easily merit inclusion, even having characteristic manner and stance of nobility, but such notions wholly dismissed, as the poor man is at very least delusional if not wholly lost to an animal-like madness.
  • Creature: Whatever this being was, it lacked a consistent form - what scholars would classify as one of the "Unknown". However, it clearly acted with a supreme intellect and deviousness, which might be attributed to its ability to absorb not only the bodies but also the minds of its victims. Its size at its center would fill a small cottage, but it could extend transparent tendrils to form simulacra (as is known as an art of wizards) appearing as perfect replicas of those it had absorbed - down to voices, manners, and memories. In addition to tremendous physical strength and force, the creature had abilities to manipulate minds and emotions as is the primary concern with the Illithid Mind Flayer threats. Speculation: the creature's power evolved as it successfully absorbed others, gaining such abilities from past victims.
  • Fugitive Beta: Valish Gant represents only a local threat, had been jailed for numerous attempts at usurping power in the Ten Towns through racketeering and protection schemes. Rather than being executed, noting concern she would anger the Host Tower of the Arcane Brotherhood, Speaker Shane Duval requested his imprisonment, which the Lords Alliance allowed, given its interests in maintaining favorable relations with Icewind Dale. The Speaker has been informed of his possible escape.  Speculation: reputedly a master of the protection-magics of Abjuration, Gant "the Brown" was able to wall up a haven for himself once the magic-dampening field failed, then waited out the violence, escaping at first opportunity.
  • Fugitive Alpha: I need not further emphasize the urgency and potential wide-reaching threat of Prisoner 002. Speculation: Based upon residual magics in the holding cells, detailed examination of the corpse of Prisoner 001, and having consulted the Goddess, it is likely Prisoner 002's escape was made possible through coordination with Prisoner 001, who died not from the creature, but in powering a dark working used by Prisoner 002. Missing parts of Prisoner 001 may be sufficient components needed for rituals to return their combined threat to our world.

Treasure & Reward

Some quick talking from Zak (or perhaps a blind eye turned allowing the group reparations for the prior imprisonment) allows the party to retain finds from the prison. The 500gp is split 125gp each. Further, the psychics make good on the reward on reaching Ten Towns, for 60gp each.

Warden's Spellbook - see Spellbooks.

(Dex uses the book to copy Mage Armor and Detect Magic into his spellbook as he reaches level 6).

Magic Items (Identify spell used by Alyks):

  1. Harper's Pin: In addition to showing membership in the faction, (and most likely a significantly high rank as well!), the pin is able to perform a group teleportation once per dawn, expending 4MP to power. The teleportation will include all willing creatures holding hands with the user or by chain of hands to the user (up to 10). Two specific destinations for the teleportation are "set" (its normal use is simply rapid travel between two locations). One location can be set by the user (by casting "Identify" on the pin - therefore, one destination is now Bryn Shander, where Alyks cast it) - the other location is harder to set (probably intentionally limited to High Harpers) as it requires use of the (7th level) Teleport spell itself. It is unknown where the other location is set to - but probably wherever the warden needed to travel to / then back to Revel's End (probably one of the Lords Alliance cities).
  2. Wand of Binding (worth 10,000gp in major city - can get offer in Bryn Shander for 6,400gp (1,280gp each). (SELL?)
  3. Beam Weapons: Two ranged weapons emitting radiant damage were found in the Nautiloid craft. Sudon has employed the Shadar-kai Gift of Elven Memory to gain proficiency in use of the strange weapon. The second weapon is held as a curiosity by Dex. Sudon notes each weapon has a limited number of charges remaining (29 and 28) and without a replacement crystal of a specific type, will cease to function afterwards.

Instigator
Zelenn the White

Zelenn the White has asked Alyks Askaria to reassure Duvessa Shane, the speaker of Bryn Shander, that the Arcane Brotherhood has no official connection to Vaelish Gant's ambitions to gain control over Ten Towns.

Result

Unfortunately, Vaelish "the Brown" Gant came upon the party before they had a chance to meet with the Speaker. This led to sufficient alarm that a faulty assumption was made and the party was shipped off with Gant to Revel's End.

There is an actual tower with the name Uthtower and a kingdom from long ago that had the same name, with the tower as its center of power.

  • The kingdom was located between Waterdeep and Neverwinter founded by Uth Myrmoran of Tavaray.
  • It began with the building of the tower in 146 DR on a tall hill on the coast by Uth and his Shoon mercenaries.
  • A powerful archmage named Iniarv served as the royal mage.
  • The kingdom was an ally with Neverwinter against the orc horde invasions alongside the kingdom of Phalorm and the dragon Palarandusk.
  • In the war against the orc hordes of 615 DR, a great battle was taking place in the lands between the Uthtower and the inland fortress called Iniarv's Tower.
  • King Uth VII awakened Iniarv who had survived the ages as a lich, begging his aid.
  • The lich, coldly cruel and wrathful of being awakened to this world, performed high magics to cause the ocean to rise up and swallow the entire kingdom - drowning orc, man, and all other life alike - forming the Mere of Dead Men out of the entire now-destroyed kingdom (and the ongoing magics cursing the High Road to never escape the reach of the swamp).
  • The Uthtower itself sunk partially into this swamp, forming a sort of catacombs  that the black dragon Chardansearavitriol (called "Ebondeath") took as a lair in 685 DR, becoming the undisputed ruler of the swamp for centuries.
  • One of the most well-known successes of the Cult of the Dragon, Ebondeath was transformed into a Unknown in 922 DR.
  • The ritual consecrated the Uthtower as sacred to the Church of Myrkul (also creating Ularan Mortus among the sacrifices).
  • In 1202 DR Ebondeath vanished - the priests of Myrkul believed he had become a god and came to the Uthtower as a pilgrimage of devotion.
  • In 1358 DR the Uthtower was completely swallowed up beneath the swamp.
  • With the appearance of the Eye of Myrkul in the sky in 1372, the tower rose from the murk and a great legion of the dead attacked nearby lands - but was unfocused by any leadership, and it sunk again soon after.
  • Recently, in 1489 DR the tower once more rose, leading to the attack on Leilon and has been thought to be similarly short-lived as the Eye of Myrkul left the sky - however, it is merely hidden behind the tail of the Dragontail Comet, and the tower remains.

The "Of-Henge Yuirs"

Beginning humbly assisting Phandalin with regional challenges, this group became empowered through the Forge of Spells just before it was buried in the destruction of the Wave Echo Caves. Their heroic adventures continue.

8LqVB3AdYaQCYIeBmKENv77gjuoWIUq7xNxXXdOg.png

Among the group are members of the Lords Alliance, Order of the Gauntlet, Zhentarim, Harpers, and the Emerald Enclave, the last two of which were present at the stone henge-like circle of menhir of the Yuir, when an ancient godling granted them their marks to employ the circles for traveling. This naming the group (to some) the "of-henge Yuirs".
