The Doom of Old Basom

Disaster
(-1235)-4-45

In the hills above Oldtown there lies a ruin where once the capital stood, once the seat of King Gwain Pendragon. It was a city of magnificence that would put even modern-day Orchalannon to shame. Paintings and tapestries exist which seem to substantiate this.

Some 967 years prior to The Rectified Procession calendar (1,235 years ago now), a cataclysm befell. Such was the completeness of the destruction that records no longer show what caused it, or precisely what it was. One day, there was a splendid city, and the next day, there was not. The king at the time escaped somehow, but died days later from heart sickness. There is no known record of his account.

It is believed that Demonic forces rose from the earth and devoured the entire city, or perhaps a sleeping titan had a bad dream and shifted in its sleep. Less credulous thinkers suggest that it was a particularly bad plague that caused madness, such as sometimes occurs in smaller settlements in Midvale when dancing plagues leave ghost towns. Sceptics and fantasists both agree however that it is unwise to go to Old Basom.
