A Dragon quest

Session 65
2021-09-23

After the group had cleared their conscience regarding the found loot, Jak finds a couple of hallucinogenic mushrooms that he helps himself a serving of after making sure their material will give a potent effect.
Since Adrian can't enter the cave room with the Dimistrium deposit, Sirona suggests that Irdien, who can see in the dark and doesn't use magic, takes a look to make sure it's empty or lures out anything inside. The Drow agrees and takes off. Unfortunately, the area turns out to be larger than anticipated, and Irdien soon disappears from view. She spots a shrine at the end of the tunnel to Svarog, God of fire, blacksmithing and the sun. Out of respect, she leaves a couple of her candy at his altar.
In the meantime, The rest of the group hears a voice asking them what they're doing here. It belongs to an elven druid that introduces himself as Silvyr, a humble servant of Devana. After talking with him, he reveals that he's been living in the mine for at least 200 years. He is very keen on knowing why the group is here and what their intentions are. After being convinced that the man with all the pretty swirling colour ain't his long-dead father, Jak gives him a long-winded recap of the worldly events that he's missed out on. Irdien returns when Jak tells Silvyr that he resides in the dwarven territory and is no longer inside the human empire's borders.
Adrian asks Silvyr about the Xorns, the Kobolds and Goltrash. The druid informs them that the Xorns were troublesome neighbours, but the kobolds he didn't mind. He mentions that Goltrash was a form of diety for the kobolds, but he knew nothing more than that.
Silvyr makes his internal verdict and tells the group that he can't let them leave. In a spur of the moment, Jak tries to stop him, but Silvyr transforms into a large black dragon, saying that he is, in fact, Goltrash.
Unfortunately, Jak's attempt to act quickly is rewarded by the dragon spewing acid all over him that burns and melts a large section of his exposed non-magical belongings. Fortunately, he manages to protect his face, but he is badly burnt and in a lot of pain.
Irdien immediately reaches up and touches her earpiece sending a cool and loving healing whisper to the bard. His burns heal, but there is still corrosive remains on his skin, eager to create new burns. Irdien runs up to the dragon and tries attacking him with her daggers. His scales are like trying to stab a stone.
Sirona activates her halo and reaches out to her grandmother, attempting to get a glimpse of the future of the battle. She then selects Irdien, Adrian and Jak, who is the closest to the dragon and sends out protective shards of ice to act as spinning shields for them. She hopes that the ice will help scrape away some remaining acids on Jak's skin, but it fails.
Adrian quickly takes some professional sidesteps and gets behind the dragon. He opens the portal to let Arcus out and buries his sword twice deep into the back of the gigantic lizard. Goltrash roars in anger and agony. Arcus faithfully sinks his teeth into the larger dragon.
Gritting his teeth in pain as Jak managed to wipe the last of the acid of himself, he tries to back away but can't. So instead, he unsheathes his rapier and tries stabbing the thing only to find, like Irdien, that his scale is annoyingly thick and hard to penetrate. Labrat takes advantage of the distraction her teammates has caused and breath lighting on Goltrash before putting her shield protectively in front of Jak, trying to give the bard a second chance to run away.
Since Adrian is the one that caused him the most pain, Goltrash ignores the trio fighting him upfront and swirls around to attack the monster hunter. Adrian impressively parries his teeth with his blade, stopping them from biting down on him, while Sirona's magical ice crystal swoops in and blocks the claws.
Irdien sends over her mechanical spiders to Adrian in an attempt to give him some extra protection now that he has taunted the dragon and the protective crystal is destroyed. Sirona hurls a javelin at the dragon from a safe distance while the others fight up close. Jak tries to send a death gauntlet at it, but The dragon takes the opportunity to snap its jaws at him. Irdien immediately jumps in front of him, pushing the giant reptile's head back. Jak stumbles backwards as Labrat lifts her sword, and with a mighty strike, she severs the head of the dragon. It falls limp to the floor, a last telepathic message echoing in all their head as it dies. "Do not let the dwarves get the node."
Uncertain what he means, the group take a quick break where Jak and Adrian try to harvest something useful from the carcass. Most of it is destroyed, but they managed to get the horns and five of its teeth.
Walking further into the mines, they find a cubical room that looks like it's been here before the mine and uncovered by accident, perhaps, during a cave-in.
In the centre of the room is a five by five feet cube glowing with powerful green energy. Adrian walks up at places a hand on it. The glow dims as it goes inside him, sending an energy surge that heals his wounds and refreshes him. As he speaks to ensure the others that he is fine, a faint glow is visible through his mouth, but it is fading.
This is a place of power, and unfortunately, it's nothing they can remove and carry with them, so the group is left to debate what to do if they wish to honour the last wish of the dragon that, in service to Devana, has been keeping the node safe for centuries.
