A Matter of Life and Death

Session 10
2020-05-14

The Guards ask to enter The Monster Hunting School. Irdien Talvaeth fools them into thinking she doesn't speak the common tongue that well. They start searching the guild house, and Adrian Maulitz learns that there is a 1000 Gold piece bounty on Jak o' the Wisp.

Outside Jak starts a commotion wanting to be released from Sirona Boyd and Labrat holding him back in the alleyway. He attracts the guard's attention and gets arrested. Sirona asks where they will be taking him and gets informed that he will be held in the Silver Shield's dungeon for now.

As they leave, Irdien follows them and quickly realizes that they are not going back to the Silver Shields posted barracks at all. She spots them bringing Jak to a dark alleyway and stab him with what looks like a poisonous blade.

They spot her, and she quickly hides, waiting for them to chase her, but they never come. When she looks back, Jak is alone on the ground. Irdien runs up to examine him and sees that he needs medical care. She hides him in the alleyway and runs as fast as she can back to get help.

The party follows her without question. Sirona immediately falls to Jak's side and closes his wound, but she can't cure the poisoning. Adrian remembers that there are leeches in the laboratory and Labrat scoops the limp body of the bard up in her arms. They all rush back to the house to save Jak.

After some treatment of the wound, Jak stabilizes but remains unconscious. The group starts discussing if they should move him to hide somewhere else. The only other ally they know is Rumwald Paige and Adrian don't want to leave Jak there alone without first curing the Wererat. He tells Sirona about his recent research and gives her the instructions of a ritual that could help or kill Rumwald. They need some ingredients first. Adrian remains behind to guard over Jak while the girls leave for the store.

On the way, Irdien spots the guards that attacked Jak, and she decides to create a diversion to lure them away from the herbalist store. She does so by flinging candy at them until they give chase. As soon as she deems that she lead them far enough away from the store, she loses them by graciously, almost taking flight up on top of a roof.

The clerk inside almost chokes on his pipe smoke at the sight of Labrat. When he has managed to stop coughing, he quickly recovers and helps them with their order of Belladonna, Wolfsbane and five types of candy that Labrat spotted and wish to try.

The girls return to the guild house and Sirona checks on Jak whom Adrian has helped to move over to his bed after some stern talking to. The bard is softly singing and seems to run a fever. They decide that moving him probably is a bad idea.

Adrian and Sirona brew the poison and packs up what they need for the ritual.

They leave for Rumwalds house, leaving Jak behind to recover. There is no answering to them knocking on the door, but since Adrian and Irdien know where the spare key is they unlock and start searching through the house. It is empty, but there is a trap door leading down to a sewer in the cellar.

Research left on a desk indicates that Rumwald is trying to figure out a way himself to break his curse, but he hasn't gotten as far as the group has to find a solution. There is an empty scratched up cage and dried blood on the basement floor.

The group wait by the trapdoor, hoping for Rumwald to return. In the meantime, they start setting up what they need for the ritual.

When Rumwald returns, he immediately notices their presence. Sirona convinces him that they are there to help and he reverts to his human form. They talk with him for a while, particularly about the fact that Adrian took a shot at him before. He tells them that he saw two people carrying a dead body through the sewer, which might be why The Lich Kingwanted him dead. He also reveals that he didn't want to join a pack of other Wererats and that is what got him on a bad footing with The Three. He says that he was cursed by The Prince of Shadows but didn't want to say what he did to deserve that. Eventually, he agrees to undergo the ritual, knowing fully that he might not survive it. Sirona locks him up in the cage to make sure he doesn't go into a frenzy and leaves the circle of chalk that they have drawn around him. Then she gives him the poison to drink. She completes the ritual after an hour of shimmering multicolored lights swirling around the circle, and Rumwald is collapsed and unmoving in his cage. He has shredded a layer of skin and flesh, and when Sirona hastens to open the cage and examine him, he is without breath and pulls.

Sirona instantly starts pumping his chest and blowing air down his lungs. She gets no response from her cardio-pulmonary resuscitation attempt. Adrian steps in pouring the content of his magical flask down Rumwald's gullet. In a desperate, last attempt to save his life, Sirona charges up her hands, and as they squeeze down on his chest releases a wave of healing energy. At last, Rumwald coughs and life return to his weak, frail and somewhat scrawnier than before, body.
