Originally hailing from the land of Aglarond, the Astora clan were formerly sorcerers that traveled over to the land of Thay in the 12th century DR that have made a name for itself in the early days as for being potent healers, seers, and enchanters, as well as being those who were in touch with the divine arts. However, as the years went on, the clan eventually shed their sorcerous origins in favor of cultivating the art of wizardry, delving into the arcane arts until some have risen themselves to the prestigious rank of being a "Red Wizard". The clan prides itself on its ability to pass on the knowledge and teachings of its more senior members, though in the 14th century DR due to a decline, they grew desperate and resorted to tactics of espionage and the employment of Phantoms in order to carry out the will of the Red Wizards while also taking out the competition amongst their ranks.

Loyalty to Thay is second only to loyalty to the clan. Rivals, competition, and enemies include the enemies of Thay, traitors to Thay, other arcane practitioners, and other Red Wizards. Knowledge is but another tool to use in great effect, especially if knowledge can be gained with little loss. Failure is only an obstacle, those who crawl back from failure are the most cunning and tenacious.

In 1484 DR, the Astora Clan lost nearly all of its prestige and was the subject of ridicule and mockery after Lucilla Astora, a Phantom in the service of her father, the Red Wizard Ketir Astora, was discovered to have sided with rebel groups and followers of the Raven Queen in destroying the necromantic works of the Red Wizards. Feeling the brunt of this betrayal and loss of control over the power that he held, Ketir Astora ordered for Lucilla to be executed along with her siblings. At that point, the clan became known as a clan of washed up has-beens, still clinging onto the prestige that it no longer has.
