The M60 is an American general purpose machinegun of the Cold War, chambered in 7.62x51mm NATO. It was conceived as America's complement to the new M14 rifle, in a new NATO-standard rifle calibre. Due to its modern ergonomics, and unlike previous machineguns, the M60 can be comfortably fired from the shoulder at close-range targets (if one can bear the weight). It replaced both the BAR and the M1919 Browning as squad automatic rifle and light machinegun respectively. The M60 rose to prominence due to its ubiquity in the infamous Vietnam War as the select weapon of helicopter door gunners, machine gunners, and special forces.
