Server Rules

Server Rules & Guides

Most important rules!

  • Don’t be a jerk. Unless it’s in character, of course!
  • The Rule of CAWT. That stands for “Can And Want To.” That means, always always always RP if and only if you CAN and WANT TO. No more, no less. We would rather see you take some time away from the RP than press on and risk burning out.
  • Say something. If there is something going on that you don’t like, please say something immediately before it drives you to the point of getting upset. Feel free to reach out to staff if you need anything. We’re here to make sure everyone is having fun, so if you’re not, please let us know ASAP!
  • You must be 18+ to join.

What you need to play

  • Join the Kanka Campaign. Be willing to get used to how to navigate around our Kanka site.  This will be your source material for the game, and where all files are stored.  You must be able to access Kanka from every device you plan to RP with.  The mobile version of the site is very good!
  • You will need to view Kanka frequently, and edit occasionally. It's all doable from phones, but we recommend using a computer for character creation.
  • Join the Discord Server.  All RP will take place on Discord.  It will all be play-by-post, at a pace that is comfortable for all involved.
  • That's it!

Houserules and Campaign Specifics

If we listed all of our houserules here, it would be too long for you to read.  It's mostly in the form of consolidations and small fixes.  When information on Kanka does not match information in the books, go with what's on Kanka, but feel free to bring it up if you think it might be an error.  Those of you experienced with GURPS would notice the following changes:

  • A lot of skills that normally require specialization, don't. Weapon skills are aslo consolidated. There are fewer of them, and they each give proficiency with more weapons.
  • Self-control is now a "global" stat, rather than choosing for each advantage.  See Secondary Characteristics
  • We're not using "appearance" modifiers; each character can assess what is attractive to them on a case-by-case basis and react accordingly. We're not using modifiers for build either, except for Small and Large
  • The Leverage mechanic.  Influence rolls can be made against PCs - it doesn't have to impact the behavior of other PCs if the other player doesn't feel it's right, but you gain Leverage from a success.
  • The Wealth mechanic.
  • Job rolls, practice/study/teaching skills, crafting, and enchanting have been changed. See Guides

Gaining and Spending Points

  • Many of our mechanics cause you to gain points through RP without GM oversight.  Any time you gain some, report it in the #gain-spend-points discord channel.
  • You can purchase advantages with your earned character points later, not just at character creation, as long as they make sense in your story.  Please get approval if you wish to gain a new advantage.  Adding more levels of advantages you already have is generally okay. If it is a secondary characteristic, or if it is recommended by your race description, these are usually okay.
  • Excluding character creation, the first point you put in a skill must be earned through Practice or by Unlocking.  If you already have a point in a skill, you can spend points on it at will. (Exceptions: spells, alchemical formulas, Teaching, crafting skills, points earned in the Training Yard)
  • There is no maximum level for casting advantages (Magery, Sorcery, and Power Investiture), but no one can ever have more than 50 points in them (combined), nor can they start play with more than 25 points in casting advantages.  This includes Magery 0, but excludes any levels innate to your race.

Campaign Specifics:

  • Characters start with a point total of 100, with up to -50 points of Disadvantages, and up to 5 Quirks.
  • If you want to play a Mage, you'll need Symbol Drawing (which has been houseruled; you don't roll it when you cast a spell) and the controlling skill(s) for your spell colleges. See also Magic, Magery 1+Sorcery, and Power Investiture.  The three types of magic use different casting rituals.  Faeries also use a special type of Magery called Glamour
  • Most of the island is Normal Mana, and we're at TL3.

Character limits:

  • There are two types of PCs: Buddies and Heros.
  • Each player can play only one Hero. Each player can also play an unlimited number of Buddies. Collaboration is encouraged!
  • You may retire any character at any time for any reason.  If you retire a Hero, you can make a new one and add up to half the earned points of the last one.  For example, if you retire a 120-point Hero, you can make a new one at 110 points. If your Hero dies, you can make a new one with half the points you earned.
  • When a character dies or retires, their buddies can latch onto a different character, retire, or stand alone.

Etiquette

Entering Scenes
  • Before entering an ongoing scene, make sure it's okay with those present.  They may be trying to set something up in particular.
  • Please also be aware of any ambient details (time of day, what's going on in the scene, where exactly everyone is, etc.) before entering the scene.
  • Keep all game-related discussions in the server.
  • Give your scene buddies some time to respond. Some of us respond slowly. Sometimes a gentle reminder ping is in order.
Personal Channels and DMs
  • If you have a question or need something, the public help channels are your first line of defense.  If it's something that CAN be handled in a public channel, please do. Someone else might have the same question or issue.
  • The personal channel's purpose is mainly for storing links.  However, if your question is too private and you don't feel it belongs in a public, then you can ask in your personal channel.
  • If you need to bring something up that you're not comfortable with all members of staff seeing, only then you can DM one of us with something game-related.
  • Please keep all discussions in your personal channels game-related.

Inactivity and Leaving
CAWT is very important to us. If you need time away, that's perfectly fine! However, if you are away for an extended period of time, we cannot put the story on hold for you. You may be left behind IC. If you know you will be away for more than a day or two, please let staff know.  If it's been 48 hours or more without either an in-character post or a notification to staff that you need some time, we will assume you are inactive and will need to move on.  If you would like to return after this, we can work something out IC for you. If you've been gone long enough, an in-story reason may have already been crafted to explain your character's absence - this will never be permanent character death. You are always welcome to return after a period of inactivity - just talk to staff about how to write you back in.

Scene Procedures and In-game Time

How to do a scene:
  • Find a scene buddy!
  • In the first post of your scene, make it clear what time of day it is in-game (morning, afternoon, evening, or night is specific enough), and exactly where you are.
  • RP and have fun!
  • When you have finished your scene, go to #timelines and give us a "Summary."  This can be very short: all we need is who was there, what they did, and when they did it. "Bob and Fred chatted in the park at sunset," for example. You can get more creative and witty if you want, but that's optional.
  • Once you have done that, block off the channel you're done using with some ===================== (or similar).
Things to note:
  • As far as scenes go, the date ticks are more of a suggestion, but try not to reach too far into the future or too far into the past.
  • You can have a character in two scenes at once, occurring at different in-game times, at your own discretion.
  • Do not use a channel whose scene has not been summarized yet.
  • If a channel you want is in use, you can find another applicable channel, or use an "any" channel. Not having a channel available should never be a reason to not start a scene!

Naughty Scenes

Keep the main RP channels to an R-rating. If clothes come off and you would like to keep RPing, please continue your scene in one of the Naughty channels.  You can also just start the scene there if you know things are going to get spicy.

You must have the Naughty role to be able to get into the Naughty channels. You can use the #role-choosing channel to opt in. All this role signifies is that you are willing to view the Naughty channels. There is no expectation that you will use them if you don't want to. If you want to imply that you character had sex but don't want to RP it, that's called "fading to black" or FTB.  Fading to black is always an option for any reason. We ask that everything that takes place on the server be consensual, both in-character and out-of-character.

And to reiterate: all players and characters must be 18+, regardless of whether they intend to participate in Naughty scenes.
