The Abyss is, isn't, was, wasn't, will be, and will not be. It is a contradictory and chaotic realm of uncontrolled wild magic, seas of monsters, swirling hells and colors, ancient timeless monstrosities, and deep secrets. The world of El-Bayir was formed from the Abyss, and the energy known as "magic" is Abyssal energy "tamed" by the God Tover. Events do not occur in the Abyss. They happen, but also have yet to happen, and their effects are felt across all time, event "before" they happen. So madness inducing is the Abyss, that if a human was cast into the Abyss, they would be ripped apart across several dimensions, timelines, and realms simultaneously, their atoms scattered across time and space. To the great loremasters, there are several questions about the Abyss which remain unanswered and likely unanswerable, unless Waazi were to be consulted, which is a major taboo as the Mad God revels in spreading madness to seekers of forbidden knowledge. The Abyss sits between universes, outside of time and space itself.

META: though it is called “The Abyss,” it is actually roughly equivalent to the Far Realm

Things that are known about the Abyss:

  1. Logic, time, geometry, magic, and control break down there
  2. Seas of screaming monsters create a cacophony of screeching and shrieking to any unlucky enough to find themselves in the Abyss
  3. The Abyss is antithetical to logic and reason, and the reasoned structures of life are annihilated by the Abyss' chaos
  4. There is no solid matter in the Abyss
  5. Nothing in the Abyss "exists"
  6. The Abyss lies in the void between universes
  7. The Abyss somehow spawned Bouwen, who was somehow able to form a Universe from it
  8. Though the Abyss is "timeless", events can concretely occur (such as the creation of Bouwen)
  9. To attempt to learn about the deep secrets of the Abyss is to court madness
  10. Waazi is likely the only being in existence who truly understands the Abyss
  11. The Gods who went to the Abyss returned with great power, but also much changed, losing any semblance of "godliness"
  12. The "black" of the night sky is the Abyss itself, which surrounds the Universe on all sides
  13. As the Abyss is dark and immaterial, light has a harmful effect on the Abyss, this is the function of starlight
