Shuria

Nation

The Kingdom of Shuria, also known as the Empire in the Desert, is a nation situated near the center of Kagreth. It divides power between several advisers and the king, and rules as an absolute monarchy.

Shuria borders the Kingdom of Imperium to its west and the Final Empire to its south.

Known For...

  • A large spice market only rivaled by the Nation of Sollabring to the south, and a monopoly on some of the continent's rarest salts and minerals.
  • Being the religious capital of the world, and accepting a thousand plus faithful into its borders every year to complete their religious pilgrimage.
  • Often being called the "invasion sink" due to the amount of preparation needed to enter its borders by enemy nations. It is a desert, after all.

Government

Shuria rules as a monarchy/oligarchy hybrid, with the king or queen being presented with a large array of advisers that help dictate the king or queen's actions. The king or queen is elected through direct lineage, and while the people can partition the king or request an audience, decisions are largely out of the hand of the populous.

When two direct blood ties are disharmonious, the advisers may allow a duel between the ruling monarch and the accuser. If the monarch is to lose, it does not mean immediate termination of his term, but it will shift the dynasty over to the branch family for a period of two-terms.

Population

The total population of Shuria is estimated to be around 128,000 crownguard citizens and 11,200 slaves.

Since populations are rounded down, races below 1% on the chart are not shown.

Their fashion exemplifies flowing robes (generally of cloth or leather) and sashes of various degrees of quality, with the upper classes wearing silk and the lower classes wearing rope.

There's a heavy emphasis on light yellows and browns, as well as jewelry. Even impoverished citizens may wear jewelry in public as part of their family inheritance.

Economy

Shuria, like its wealthier cousin to the south, has a flourishing spice market. Many of its unique flavors are exported across the world, and several rare salts and minerals can only be found in Shuria.

In addition, it is the religious capital of the world, and thousands of faithful make the pilgrimage every year, which brings the Kingdom of Shuria much money in tourism.

History

The Kingdom of Shuria was birthed after the first pilgrims settled there in 2919 AD. It was stated in the ancient scripture that Anu, their guardian deity, traveled there before his death and ascension a thousand years before the Breaking.

Eventually, a governing system was established over the course of several years, where Amenrut Mered was crowned the first king of the colony. Several years later, Shuria grew incredibly wealthy in the spice trade, eventually splitting off into several city states called constituencies.

Around 3033 AD, they were defeated by the Final Empire in a war which lasted a grand total of ten years, where the battered Shuria barely escaped the onslaught to their capital cities. The nation was split, with the latter half (under the Final Empire's tutelage), becoming even wealthier than Shuria was decades past. These lands would later become a vassal to the Final Empire, and eventually a free nation named Sollabring.

Military

Shuria's military is often referred to as being one of the best in the world due to a combination of factors: the loyalty the unit shares to each adjacent party, their skill in combat, the knowledge of terrain, and most importantly, their heart.

Unfortunately, even after a mandatory 3-year conscription law was passed in 3020 AD, the military number of Shuria is still abysmally low compared to other developed countries. Much of Shuria's population, especially after their war with the Final Empire, is not suited for combat.

While an individual unit may best another kingdom's in one-on-one combat, the true nature of their military force is minuscule compared to the number of armies their enemies can put out, even on short notice.

The Kingdom of Shuria maintains one elite unit whose tenure is a closely-guarded secret: the Sand Guardians, whose job is to protect the religious sites once said to house Anu, and to protect the ancient landmarks from any magical tampering (such as the Great Sphinxes).
