Arban

Arban is not the largest minotaur. He is 6’11” tall and weighs about 250 pounds. By human standards that sounds like a very large creature but not among the minotaurs. It is almost puny among his tribe.

He is mostly dark brown. He has dark brown fur all over his body and face and dark brown eyes. He does not have a ring in his nose like many minotaurs. Not having a ring is a sore spot for Arban. It might set him into a rage if you ask about it or joke about it. He will not talk about it much. Although rarely seen he has a large scar on the back of his left shoulder. Even more rarely seen he has a tattoo of Helm’s Gauntlet over his heart. He shaves the spot to keep it visible.

Where the Beast Comes from

Korinn_Archipelago.jpgThe only known or rumored tribes of minotaurs are located in the northern parts of The Sea of Moonshae in the Koriann Archipelago. These tribes tend to stay to themselves. They are generally treated terribly by the other races of the Faerûn. They are often viewed as evil as they are brutal warriors. They do not take prisoners and rarely surrender. They are beasts in some ways.

Legend says that all minotaurs are male, that they were cursed warriors for a great demon lord. There is some evidence for this because of the demon lord that rules Jacaman. This may have been true but there are females today. Most modern minotaurs dismiss this as pure folk lore. These minotaurs have lived this way for several hundred years and the truth about their origin is unknown to them.

Arban was born in a Minotaur village on the island of Ventris. It is the largest island in the middle of Koriann. This is good for most of the tribes as they can spread out. The whole area is isolated enough that very few humans come into the area. Ventris has one very small human town on the coast. They rarely adventure out. This town was founded from a group of humans that escaped from Jacaman.

There are about 15 tribes of Minotaurs on Ventris. About half of the tribe’s form villages and about half live as mobile groups. Moving from place to place. These tribes all tend to live separately. They do have a yearly gathering called “The Culling”. They do this to discuss grievances and trade brides.

Picked on as a kid for being a runt

map.pngArban has always been the runt within in village. Other kids in the village picked on him, for being small. In his early life he was called “Mirliq Grurif” (means: Little fellow) or “Mirliq” for short. He would often fight with them. This is actually encouraged as it would make him a better warrior. I would love to tell you that it worked but tragically it did not. He was always beaten up. His parents would tell him to fight harder in the future.

This continues most of his life. By human standards his childhood would seem brutal, but he came from a very loving family and village. They believed in making their males tough warriors and all the fights with the weak only make them stronger over time. Even if Arban never became a great warrior in the tribe, it did make him stronger. He has two older brothers and one younger sister. His mother Dunral is the villages main baker and none for her amazing bread. His father was a good warrior and hunter in the village. He was in the inner circle for their leader Tunbuk.

Leader_of_the_Village.jpgTunbuk leads the tribe and is the final answer on all questions. He is a huge Minotaur towering at just over 8’ tall. He is not the greatest warrior in the tribe, but he is the strongest and no one dares challenge him.

He never liked Arban, mostly because of his small size and weak fighting abilities. He often encouraged others to help train/fight with Arban. Part of his distain with Arban was an unsaid conflict with Arban’s Father. His father had no plans to lead, but most of the tribe loved him and he was a much better warrior. Arban was just easy to pick on.

The Arrival of Paladin of Helm Wylymot the Faithful

In his early teens a Paladin of Helm named Wylymot the Faithful started coming to the village. He claimed that an evil force was coming to the area and he was there to protect them. It turns out the evil he was after was actually on a different island, but he thought it was here. He should have gone to Jacamac, to help defeat the demon lord there.

Wylymot is a paladin from the great city of Waterdeep. He was studying in the great temple to Helm when he was sent on a mission from his god. Travel to Koriann and defend the locals from the great demon lord. Like any good paladin, he did not question this or research it all. He gathered up his things that day and headed to the docks to board a ship heading to Koriann.

The sea caption took him to the small village in Ventris. The town folk told him of great evils on the island. They knew about the minotaurs and other creatures on the island and thought this paladin might help them clear some of them out. He knew he had found the right place. His connection with Helm started to become difficult and he took that as a further sign that he must be in the right place.

As Wylymot traveled the island he started to fight evil but did not find this big bad he was looking for. He knew he would find it and save the island. He started running into the different tribes of the minotaurs. Never finding them evil he befriended them, and even learned their language. As he traveled more and more among the minotaurs preaching the greatness of Helm, he stumbled into Arban’s village.

This village was very nice to him. They gave him a place to rest whenever he came to town. He loved the bread the Arban’s mom baked and often stayed here longer then anywhere else. Wylymot being human saw the way they treated Arban terribly and started to befriend him. He started to train him the ways of Helm. Arban took to it well as a break for the other issues in the village.

Over the next four years Wylymot spent a lot of time with Arban. He was teaching him, prepping him for the battle with evil to come. Evil did come. A group a small demons attacked the village one night. Wylymot burst into action to protect the town. He was specifically working to protect Arban’s family.

Wylymot went in to protect Dunral from 2 demons. He was protecting her, but he was leaving himself open to his flank. Arban had been instructed to hide as he was not a warrior in the tribe. He leaped out to protect Wylymot. Fighting to his right. While protecting him a demon slashed him across the back of his shoulder. A deep scar and he was at risk of dying. Wylymot laid his hand on Arban and healed him. He was still bleeding but he was no longer going to die

While Wylymot was healing Arban a demon struct him in the back. He turned just enough that Arban killed the demon with a dagger. Wylymot had saved the village, but the damage was done. He was dying. He had used all his healing to heal Arban, and now he was dying. He must have been in great pain, but he had a smile across his face. That smile you get for pleasing your god. “Praise be to Helm”, he spit out.

Arban took him in his arms. Wylymot told him, that he was now a cleric of Helm. He should go out to protect the world. He gifted him with his armor, weapons, holy symbol and prayer book. As his one last request, he wanted Arban to take his signet ring to the temple in Waterdeep.

Arban knew this was his charter.

Never became a warrior in the tribe

Arban was still injured when the warrior tests came that year. When a minotaur male becomes 16 they must test to become a warrior. If they fail, they can never become a warrior in the tribe. Arban’s shoulder was still healing when the test came up.

Tunbuk used the attack on the village as a way to organize the test. All four males that were 16 and one 18-year-old female took the test, including Arban. Males must take the test females can any time after their 17th birthday. Did Tunbuk do this knowing Arban could not pass, who knows. All the other contestants passed but not Arban. With his shoulder messed up, he just could not pass any of the strength tests.

For the fighting tests, Arban wore the Holy Amulet of Helm, and did a small prayer of protection for all those sparring. He fought better than he had ever fought, using the human paladin’s fighting styles. Even with one hand not available to him, he was able to pass each test. It was just the strength tests that blocked him from becoming a warrior of the tribe.

Arban would never be able to wear the nose ring of a warrior.

Left to become a cleric

Wylymot had told arban he was a cleric, but he knew he was not. He needed to join the church itself. Not passing the warrior test was the final straw so, Arban would now gather all his personal items and head to Waterdeep to join the temple. He gathered up all of the gifts from Wylymot, including 100 gp. He would use that to travel to Waterdeep.

The armor did not fit well, but Arban wore it with pride. He said goodbye to his family and headed to Waterdeep. Every morning he started to pray from the prayer book as Wylymot had taught him. He wanted to be well versed in the all the teaching of Helm and the Order of “He Who Watches Over Travelers”. He made sure to live the code everywhere he went.

The trip was not easy as many places he went were afraid of him. He tried to help everyone he could. The trip to Waterdeep could have been done in a month, but with following the code it ended up taking him several months. He was starting to understand the prayers more and more, but he was not a cleric.

After the long journey he finally arrived at the temple in Waterdeep. He was not welcomed at all and was initially treated as a thief. They even arrested him and placed him in a cell within the temple. Arban’s difficult childhood strengthened him for this treatment and he acted with great dignity.

The temple left him in a cell for several days. They finally decided Arban was not a villain in this piece and freed him. During a long interrogation the head cleric waved his hand. He tells the council of priest that it is clear they are not going to let Arban join the priesthood.

He looked at Arban, and said, “I am sorry, my friend. It is clear to me that you truly live Helm’s great virtues. This panel does not. We are not going to let you join. It is time to stop wasting your time. I know we have not done this yet so let me say Thanks You for returning Wylymot’s ring and story. We had wondered what happened to him. You may now leave, with all the gift that Wylymot gave you. I wish to give you my personal prayer book as well. Let this guide you as you protect it. Again, my giant friend, we will not let you join the order of Helm, but we are not the final word. Pray well each morning, live your life this way, and Helm may bring you into the order. Now go out in peace and protect those that need it.”

He stood up and walked out of the room. The rest of the council just stairs at him. You could almost see all of their mouths sitting on the ground. He looks backed at Arban to follow him.

Out to help others

Arban Followed the head cleric down some stairs to a private chamber. This was clearly not designed for the size of a minotaur as Arban had to duck his head multiple times. Once they arrived in a private chamber, the cleric closed the door. He pointed to a stout looking chair and asked him in a very gentle voice to have a seat.

Continuing in his now very gentle voice, “As I stated, we are not the ones that will finally let you into the order. That will be Helm. In Helm’s great wisdom, you may already be a cleric. I do not know.” He hands Arban a book. “You may do anything you like, but if I was you, not me, but you, I would travel to Nightstone in the norther regions. A dark wind is gathering, and I think Helm, has brought you here to help protect the innocent there. Seek out Lady Velrosa Nandar.

Velrosa_Nandar.jpgThe residents of Nightstone have a longstanding and seemingly irreconcilable conflict with their northern neighbors, the elves of the Ardeep Forest. Lady Velrosa has been searching for skilled mediators to help resolve the dispute.

I think your strength will help be resolve the dispute.

While there, seek out The Order of the Gauntlet. I think you will fit in well with that group.

Remember to live the code, pray every day, and protect the innocent.

I have asked the Order to have your armor repaired and resized for you. Stay here for a few days rest then head north. While here come to my room each morning for prayers.

Thank You my Giant Friend.”

After four days, Arban gathered his things and headed north with a renewed resolve to become a cleric of Helm.
