The Matter of Astley and Greville

Main Quest

Four newly knighted noblemen become embroiled in a scandalous conspiracy, and are obliged to embark on a daring journey to personally seek redress with one of the king's closest allies.

At the Unknown on the 3rd day of King's Week, they obliged Maerlyn D'Ambrosio in one of her small plots, to save the champion weta player Algernon Plath from some kind of demonic curse. The court sorceress' schemes do not often make complete sense (and she never explains anything), but they were handsomely rewarded with enchanted items.

Later at the soiree, Sir Vervain of Astley informed them of a dastardly plot to ruin him (and their families) by Lord Byron Greville, steward of Redfenland County county. Together, they hatched a plan to reverse this unfortunate situation. The knights will travel to Oldtown, strike at the heart of the criminal syndicate known as The Pact, and seek redress with Lord Greville to clear the name of Astley. The keen young knights were urged not to make too much haste however, and to arrive in a manner befitting the message they intend to make: a western route (outside the reach of the curse, far into the rugged outlands of Midvale), or the eastern path, which has many diversions for a well-connected highborn lord.

On the 4th day of King's Week, the knights engaged themselves in the Fair Day Riddling Tournament. Sir Bastian Winterstar was enraged at some of the riddles, and Sir Lucan Eastwood distinguished himself by solving a word puzzle. They were unable to take the pot, however.

On the 5th day, Sir Lucan and Sir Bastian both had a mind to try and become the Hero of the Week, and threw down 100 crowns each in order to make their case to the crowds why they should light the bonfire tower. Sir Lucan made a show of comedy, music, and acrobatics with the Brig's Fetters, swinging from the boughs of the hanging gardens. This brought some applause. Sir Bastian went to Yelverton Priory at Widdershins Way, seeking a pitiful tramp to use to gain the crowd's sympathy. He found Hendrick, a mangy legless cack-eyed urchin. At first the scamp appeared near death, but the prospect of gold proved a powerful medicine. After musical accompaniment from Sir Lucan, and a rousing, sympathetic speech from Sir Bastian, Hendrick leapt from the knight's back and suddenly squashed their chances of winning the pot of gold, when he also sadly squashed his manhood under his legless torso by a freak accident. After hearing Hendrick curse and holler, the crowd turned against them. Eventually, Sir Bastian's squire, Loriel of Summerport (Sir Maxwell of Summerport's cousin) also entered, and his good looks and winsome attitude won the crowd over. Not as strong as his liege knight, he had some difficulty with the climb, but he survived.

Now, it is 1 Morning's Star, RP 268. Under heavy rains and irritating cold, the cadre of knights begin Making Ready.
