Calliope

The Vanished
Player Character

Backstory

Calliope has spent over 500 years with Versi hidden away from the world; though, before leaving to find the other Heroes, she had no idea of just how long she had spent with the Oracle and no memory of the life she lived before. Unsurprisingly, as the Nymph has been the centre of her world for as long as she can remember, Calliope loves Versi and trusts her implicitly.

With no real-world experiences to draw from, at least not anymore, it is fair to say that Calliope did not particularly appreciate the importance of the quest and the dangers the group might face at the beginning. But this very quickly changed upon the group’s arrival in Estoria.

Calliope now finds herself both in awe of the outside world, and heartbroken by all the problems it seems to be facing. She holds a fair amount of guilt for having ‘run away’ from Thylea and its issues, and is determined to do her best to save it.

As the group travel, Calliope has begun to remember things; though her memories of the past are fragmented and disjointed. She now finds herself caught between the desperate desire to know more, and fear of the pain that Versi has warned her will follow if she remembers her past.

The clearest memories she has, and the ones that haunt her dreams the most, are of her time spent as a slave on Yonder before meeting and being rescued by Versi.

At some point after that, Calliope knows she befriended and worked with the Dragonlords though she remembers little of it. She assumes this is how she met Damon; whom she is certain she cared for dearly, having now remembered a little of their past together.

She also now knows that, although she cannot remember them, her flock hailed from a small village called Elefthe that was destroyed in the war during a battle between the Dragonlords and the Titan’s forces. Of everything, she is most scared of remembering this, as even just hearing the village’s name brings tears to her eyes.

Personality

Without any memories to draw on, Calliope is naive and idealistic to a fault. She is always willing to jump in to save someone: but her bravery comes more from an inability to judge risks, borne from her lack of experience, than from a place of true heroism. She is generally enthusiastic, excitable and eager to please and, with very few frames-of-reference for personal interactions outside of those she has had with the Oracle, she has the tendency to be a little too familiar and intimate with those around her.

As with all Sirens, Calliope’s mood flips between joyous and despondent on a dime. But this change is not something she is very practiced at dealing with: life with Versi was a lot simpler. Because of this, travelling with the party is taking some getting used to, with strong negative emotions rearing their heads much more often than she can ever remember them doing so before.

Appearance

Standing at 5'0" tall, Calliope has long black hair which she usually wears loose, but sometimes braids in moments of contemplation or focus. She has white feathered wings and ears, with small patches of shiny silvery-white scales across her body. Her taloned feet match these silvered tones, as do her eyes when her mood is low; however, when happy, her eyes transition to a golden hue.

Calliope has a propensity to dive headfirst into things and is unafraid to get messy but, despite this, generally keeps a finely manicured appearance due to unconsciously ‘preening’ in quiet moments; a habit she has picked up from years of having no real purpose other than to be pretty and entertain Versi. After spending time with the party, she has begun to extend this practice to them too: using prestidigitation without even thinking about it to clean mud, etc. off of them as they travel.

She mostly wears finely made, delicate, and slightly impractical dresses and jewellery gifted to her by the Oracle. Calliope’s wardrobe is very much that of a ‘lady of leisure’, rather than an adventurer, with beauty favoured over function. This is somewhat in contrast to the pieces of light armour she has been wearing over the top of the dresses as the party travels (which she is usually eager to take off whenever she can: she isn’t used to such uncomfortable and utilitarian clothing.)

Since finding the Headband of Intellect in the mines, she has not taken the intricate silver and gold circlet off; she finds the clarity of mind it has given her, after spending so much time in a dream-like state, comforting in the face of realising just how much she has forgotten.

Other Information

As a musician, Calliope favours her harp over other instruments: though at times where it is impractical to use it she reverts to using her crotalum instead. She carries around a scroll case, decorated with flower and feather motifs, that contains the music (and letters) that she is currently working on.
