Papyrus Ebers

The Papyrus Ebers was written in about 1500, during the First Age by Herbalists, Medicos and Shamans of the Gnomis Gnant. It is believed to have been copied from earlier texts, that suggests the gnomes have a much longer literary and medicinal historry than modern Imperial scholars are aware of.

The Papyrus Ebers consists of 110 scrolls, which is about 20 fathoms long in total. Along with the Papyrus Kahun Potioniatica (c. 1700 1A), the Papyrus Edwineva Surgeonannaus (c. 1750 1A), the Papyrus Heartust (c. 1900 1A) and the Papyrus Lonydon Medicae (c. 1980 1A), the Ebers Papyrus is among the oldest preserved medical documents that was given to the suffereing Dragon Empire after the defeat of the The Lich King.

As can be expected, the entirety of the Papyrus is rarely found in one place, apart from in the libraries of capital cites, private mage libraries and the Gnomis Gnant; and so in this edition is listed the most important herbs that can be used with a portable Alembic. It has been written in its original Gnomish, with a common translation beneath.

Beggartick blossoms - The leaves of beggartick blossoms, a common field plant with big red flowers, are used in the treatment of Colorectal Cancer, Jaundice and can regulate the blood sugars of diabetes patients. Mandrake root - A poisonous plant whose humanoid-shaped roots have many magical properties. The necropolis of Fen Carn is said to have an unusually large "population" of female mandrake plants. The root of the m., which is a valued ingredient in medicine and herb lore, long ago had great import in superstitions, particularly among the Nordlings; human effigies (called alruniks or alrunes) were carved from it and kept in homes as revered talismans. They were believed to offer protection from illnesses, to bring good fortune during trials, and to ensure fertility and uncomplicated births.

A fresh mandrake is considered so toxic that the earth surrounding one is poisoned by the plant and that even breathing in the fumes or sprinkling the fresh juice onto a cut hand can have fatal consequences. At the very least, even if one doesn't die from it, the toxin secreted by the root causes powerful hallucinogenic effects. As such, care is taken to use a mask and gloves to pick them

Notable among mandrake's many alchemical uses is its use in the potion that maintains the longevity of sorcerers, preventing further ageing (but not restoring lost youth).
