Zair Khan

Gunsmith of the Brimstone Brotherhood
Player Character

Born to a Bishari commodore, Zair Khan was welcomed into this world with the celebratory BOOM of a naval cannon, and thus tethered his fate to the wonders of firepower.

Twenty-five years ago, Commodore Zaya Khan offered her firstborn son to the Brimstone Brotherhood as collateral for an unprecedented endeavor: an armed expedition to plunder the fabled island of Garanja. In exchange for a provision of guns and cannons, the commodore agreed to share her findings there with the brotherhood. Since then, Zaya was never heard from again. Her flotilla went with her, disappearing without a trace.

Young Zair would spend the bulk of his life paying off Commodore Khan’s debts to the brotherhood. As the boy had no memory of his mother, he earnestly slaved away at the gunsmithing forge until he was a man. It was never a chore to him, but a proving ground. Meticulous and keen in his work, Zair crafted some of the best weapons for the Darian Admiralty. Even after paying off his mother’s debts, he continued gunsmithing for the Brimstone Brotherhood because he knew no other profession. He was eventually initiated as an honorary Brimstone Brother, an identity he still holds with pride.

After Zair’s official induction into the brotherhood, his mother’s legacy was no longer a secret kept from him. From Zaya’s old writings, Zair gleaned the image of a reckless explorer, so infatuated with tales of Garanjan technology that she was willing to risk her son losing a mother to obtain them. But Zaya was determined to take her prize by force; her underestimation of the island’s natives certainly brought doom to her fleet, or so the brothers believed. To avoid that mistake, the Brimstone Brotherhood entertained the idea of peaceful trade with the Garanjan natives without bringing a navy to their shores.

Zair now joins a handful of Brimstone Brothers as they embark on a diplomatic mission to Garanja. But after their Bishari merchant host is shipwrecked by a storm, he awakens on the island’s uncharted shore and finds his brothers missing.
