Evariel

Folk Tale

Evariel loved the sea. Every aspect of it fascinated her. Her heartbeat to the rhythm of the waves crashing upon the rocks. She was a friend to every seabird and sailor. Desiring to always be in sight of the sea, Evariel created a tower of alabaster and shell that rose up from the rocky coastline, and from its highest reaches she watched the sea. Time began to pass, and she began to spend more time in her tower, always watching, dreaming the sea was enveloping her, embracing her.

Days turned into weeks, weeks turned into months, and months turned into years and nothing could break Evariel's fascination. Her courtiers grew ever more concerned for their lady, as they could overhear her whispering to the sea, saying how she yearned to be one with it. Eventually, her court departed. Then her friends. And finally, sorrowfully, her family departed, unable to break Evariel free from the spell of the sea.

Some say Evariel never left her tower. Others say that finally the sea called her home and she cast herself off the tower into the waiting embrace of the sea. Sailors passing by the decrepit remains of her tower say that they can hear whispers on the wind, telling them of the infinite beauty of the sea. Telling them to look and see the wonders beneath the waves. Telling them to come join her.

Your hands grip the railing. Suddenly all you can hear is a voice inside your head. A woman's voice. Calm. Melodic. It makes you want to do exactly as she says.

"Jump."
