The Arcane Institute

Guild

Theder's Arcane Institute is a powerful guild of magic users who aim to further their study of the arcane and remove the last of the stigma around magic use. The organisation has presence in many of the cities across the kingdom, and holds influence with the crown.

The Arcane Institute takes on students with promise in the magical arts, but will also take on students from the nobility who have paid their way in – this builds ties with powerful people across the kingdom as well as bolstering the institute's coffers.

Structure

The Arcane Institute is divided into chapters, each chapter being based in a different city. The heads of each chapter form a council named The Four which makes decisions that affect the entire guild.

Wizards of the institute are ranked according to their level of power and knowledge, with each rank unlocking further magical secrets.

  • Initiate: a new student to the institute. Wizards are generally an initiate for a year while their magical aptitude is assessed.
  • Acolyte: a beginner in the arcane arts, generally people study at this level for 5 years.
  • Apprentice: an apprentice works directly with a Magus or an Archmagus, honing their skills and often specialising in a particular branch of magic. A person might remain an apprentice for their entire life, though most spend 5–10 years.
  • Magus: A fully-fledged member of the institute. Magus often act as advisors for noble and ruling families.
  • Archmagus: A full council member, archmagus most often lead a chapter or advise high up members of the royal family. Some archmagus work directly with similar organisations in other kingdoms, such as Pauviel.
