Nicholas is a carpenter in Crynnan, where he was born, and owner of 'Buckler's' Cabinet makers. He is married to Margaret Buckler with whom he adopted Katherine Buckler.

Nicholas Buckler has always lived in Crynnan and worked in his father's busy cabinet making workshop from childhood. Originally armourers, the family business had shifted to domestic furniture over several generations to meet the changing demands of the peaceful region. The economic fallout of disrupted trade with the cities dwarves neighbours in the early 4100's led to gradual decline of Nicholas's father's business and when Nicholas took over it's finances on his death he found it in a worse state than expected. He met Margaret in 517UN (4115) at 26 - he had a small workshop by the docks (the last of his father's 3 workshops) and took on the kind of decorative carving work that often lay beyond the skills of ships carpenters. He was smitten by Margret's dashing good looks and quiet confidence - after long nights talking over coffee brewed on the wood fired stove in his workshop they moved in together and set up shop together, eventually adopting a foundling left at the dockland guardhouse.

After careful calculations, in 534UN (4132) he spent years of savings on a large workshop and shop front on the dilapidated Dial Street, just as the Crynnans fortunes changed for the better - by 539UN (4137) the street was a bustling hub of commerce, Buckler's employed a busy workshop of artisans. Although not hugely wealthy his prudence and good family name places him in excellent standing with his community where he is respected as a well liked employer. He has few ambitions to do any more than run his shop and spending the evenings making ornate puzzle boxes for his own amusement while Margaret inlays the wood with clever designs in metal.
