On the History of the Nine Kingdoms of Yarlung

Historical text

Scoria

On the subject of the Kingdom of Scoria, homeland of the Scoria covers much of the continent of Kailash, far to the west. I have been able to befriend some of the younger dwarves, who have given to me a working idea of the placement of major cities. And I have learnt the most fundamental features of dwarven society; that dwarves revere nature to the extreme, unwilling to even harm a single tree to obtain wood. Dwarves carve their homes out of unliving stone, beneath the surface; their possessions, from ornate thrones to simple bowls alike are likewise shaped from various stones and ores. Even their recordkeeping is done with clay tablets, or metallic engravings, depending upon importance.

Barbas

The Kingdom of Barbas, commonly disregarded as a land of little value and no real culture, is one of several such misunderstood societies. Located on the northernmost end of Kailash, stretching out as far east as the mountain range on the northwest tip of Yarlung, their kingdom is home to a nomadic and minimalist people. As the land of Kailash is mainly comprised of arid, inhospitable desert, this is a necessary approach to life on the surface, in contrast to the comparatively easy living of the Barbas have a rich history of storytelling, a surprisingly long cultural memory, and an aptitude for combat and cooperation which makes the tracking and capture of larger beasts a routine matter. Although the Barbas are hostile to outsiders, this is largely a result of a pervasive scarcity mindset and not outright hatred.

Barba-Rhea

Similarly, the Kingdom of Barba-Rhea is misunderstood; the Barba-Rhea to be nothing more than wrathful savages, a plague visited upon them from the northeast, a people with nothing to offer and naught on their mind but razing and pillaging all in their path. Nothing could be further from the truth - the Barba-Rhea are but a wise and cultured people who suffer from an unfortunate combination of hostile geographic features and poor relations with neighboring societies. While more 'civilized' societies such as Barba-Rhea is seldom actively aggressive. The Barba-Rhea spend most of their time hunting and foraging for such food and water as will enable their population to survive the Barba-Rhea desert, and when this fails, they send some brave souls down Ressaria, who bear the brunt of the assault due only to geographical constraints.

Unfortunately, although they would be loathe to admit it, this is seldom seen as a tactic with any great chance of success. Although Barba-Rhea sends only its weakest warriors, unwilling to risk the strong. The warriors appear to understand, and even accept without complaint, that this is to cull the numbers of the Barba-Rhea, reducing their population to survivable figures, while still maintaining a slim chance of retrieving some small measure of food and drink. When asked why they do not trade, all manner of rationale are given; it can take hours to parse through the response for what is true, what is believed, and what is merely offered as an excuse. It seems the people of Barba-Rhea are all at once opposed to the concept of currency, not possessed of any real goods to trade, too proud to beg or to sell their services to an outsider, as well as suffering from too much negative opinion and storied conflict to initiate any real discussions on the subject in the first place.

Zerzura

The final of the desert kingdoms of significance on the Yarlung continent, Glassweird Desert to the south, they have little to fear from the outside world and none of the limitations or scarcity of the other desert kingdoms. The king of Council of Dios Thronos to facilitate trade and the exchange of ideas. I am confident that they will be one of the greatest and most expansive kingdoms of Yarlung before the passing of more than a handful of decades.

Ressaria

(This passage details much of the usual information about Ressaria; its ease of access to metal ore, its large population, complex castes of nobility, and substantial army. It notes that while they have the potential to be a danger to the continent as a whole, they also have the capacity to do great works; for this reason, Gnilda relays that he has built and stocked several major libraries across the kingdom, with the hope of teaching wisdom.)

The Ecclesiocracy

(This passage details much of the usual information about The Ecclesiocracy; its diversity, the nature of its ruling council, the dedication of its cities to various deities.)

Vandermane

(This passage details much of the usual information about Vandermane; the self-governance provided by the stationing of a Atlasian Sea and its lack of vessels capable of traversing the dangerous waters thereof.)
